HARDTAIL HIGHBALL 29ERS ARE A BEAUTIFUL THING.
Regardless of the location where you ride mountain bikes, it’s likely that the revolution of 29er Bikes are taking your local network of trails over. MTB riders are jumping on the bandwagon in droves to the big hoops due to the fast rolling attributes they give. ‘Possibly it’s time to join the march,’ you’re thinking … but you’re not sure you want to afford a new toy for hobby. You might consider letting Santa Cruz show the way with their Highball Aluminum D XC Bike carry you into your brave new world. The first generation Highball rolled out last year as the first full-carbon hardtail from Santa Cruz , and was very well liked by the masses like a conquering hero. So they took their renowned experience with aluminum to model a frame that copies the performance of the carbon version, but at a much easier price to pay.
While the geometry on the hydroformed Highball alloy is literally identical to the carbon framed version. A few items that people really like with the hard tail model are its shorter 17.3 inch chain stays that place your center of gravity closer over the rear wheel. The position allows for a fun amount of playing—which makes it lack that lumbering feel of some 29ers from other mt manufactures. It’s capable of popping out of corners and navigating very tight, technical lines with a grin. For this reason, if you’ve been considering moving up to a big wheeler, but have been wary because of some the common objections—such as reduced maneuverability and slower acceleration—this ride may make you question the validity of claims about what a bigger wheel really can’t do.
The Santa Cruz Highball D XC Complete Bikes come stock with fixed dropouts for using a rear derailleur, but they are removable. Santa Cruz has also made available the swinger-style dropouts for converting it to a single speed. The component package offers an awesome bang for the buck. Santa Cruz loaded it up with a Rock Shox Recon Silver TK 29 100mm fork that’s plush and easy to service. The rims are WTB Laser disc paired to Shimano hubs, mounted with Maxxis Cross-mark 2.1 inch width tires. It has a 10-speed drive train with a triple crank set to allow you to have a mega range of gearing options. Shimano SLX rear derailleur, Deore front derailleur, with Deore shifters. The steering is handled with an Easton EA30 low-riser alloy bar, which allows for a riding position that blends performance with comfort. Avid Elixir brakes.
