45NRTH drops the Wölvhammer
The Bike gear company based in Bloomington, Minnesota called 45NRTH has just unveiled a heavy duty boot for winter cycling use that’s called the Wölvhammer. This SPD compatible heavy-duty boot utilizes 6 different layers of materials, having an insulated internal boot that’s surrounded and fully protected by a water and weather resistant outer.
“More people than ever are riding and commuting on bikes through the entire frozen season, so there has been a growing demand for SPD-compatible footwear,” reported David Gabrys, the brand manager at 45NRTH . “So our mission was to create the warmest and most comfortable cycling boot on the market.”
He reported that some of their design concepts for the new Wölvhammer winter cycling boots came from mountaineering boot technology. As an example, the winter boot utilizes a Vibrum MTB X insulated sole, and has a gaiter hook that allows you to attach your knee high gaiters for ultra protection against deeper snow conditions.
“We have been riding through Minnesota winters for many years, where the average frozen temperature is 13° Fahrenheit,” Gabrys said. “We know what works in the cold and what doesn’t.”
One super-cool piece of technology that the 45NRTH designers are proud of is their aerogel insoles, which will completely block out any cold infiltration that comes from the steel SPD cleat. 45NRTH will have these Jaztronaut Insoles available for sell separately as well for $50 USD.
For the Wolvhammer’s inner boot, they have insulated it with 200 gram Thinsulate and lined it to make it very comfy using a combination of their “monster fur” and a synthetic fleece. The outer boot shell has 1000-denier Cordura for durability, and for waterproofing and breathability a Sympatex membrane, with an Action Leather toe mudguard.
“When you stick your hand inside the inner chamber it is meant to feel comfy and cozy like what a Sorel setup feels like,” Gabrys reported.
The Jaztronaut Insoles are an additional layer of insulation and protection against mother nature
They designed the boot to be tightened down with an upper cinch lock closure, and a sealed YKK zipper for the outer layer, with a Velcro strip wraps over the top of the zipper to enclose it all in nicely.
The 45NRTH Wolvhammer winter cycling boots are available in the full sizes only, going from 38–50 (having no size 49), and will retail for $325 USD. The weight of a size 44 boot is approximately 780 grams.
You can pre order now but the Wölvhammer won’t be delivered until December 1.
