Tune Rim Tape 18 & 20mm widths / shave weight

Tune_tubeless Rim Tape 22mm_28m-width_full color range

Tune has been making lightweight tubeless rim tape to seal up your mountain bike wheels for quite a while. But now they are giving roadies (and other narrow rim riders) a chance to drop a few grams going tubeless as well. At just 5-7g per wheel,Tune’s highly resistant translucent yellow tape isn’t the lowest stretch, but they say their version offers better forming to the profile of your rims while still not deforming much over your spoke holes and delivering a strong adhesion across a wide temperature range for seasons of trouble free use.

The light Rim Tape now comes in an 18mm width to fit their own Schwarzbrenner 38C, Schwarzbrenner 60C, Tune 25C & TSR Cross wheels and 20mm width to fit the Airways & TSR22, or of course any other rims with those dimensions. 18 & 20 join 22, 24, 26, 28 & 30mm widths to fit a broad range of tubeless applications. Each of the 7 widths is sold in two roll lengths – an 11m consumer roll for about five 700c/29er rims for 14€ or a 66m shop roll to set up 30 rims for 45€.

Of course you can also get light alloy Tune valves if you need those, or even Tune-branded, no-latex One Shot sealant from your local Tune dealer.

3T Discus C35 Team Stealth Wheels

The Discus C35 Team Stealth wheelset is the mid-range wheelset from the 3T Discus range. 25mm wide all-carbon-fibre rims offer a 20% overall weight saving over the entry 3T Pro model.

Centerlock disc-brake hubs with 24 bladed spokes front and rear offer industry-standard fitment for quality disc-brake setups. The 3T linear+ system optimizes build quality and asymmetric rim drilling reduces difference in spoke tension between drive side and non-drive side.

The Discus hubs have a light-alloy oversize spindle with modular end-caps that can be easily swapped from quick-release to thru-axle as needed; rear width can run 135mm or 142mm to fit the latest CX and gravel-grinder thru-axle framesets.

The all-carbon-fibre rim is 32mm deep with a blunt profile for stable aerodynamic performance at typical angles to the wind. A wide tyre bed provides a really firm base to run the latest, race-weight fat tyres at lower pressures.

  • Advanced Technology

  • Wider contact surface
  • Less rolling resistance

  • Weight: 1.464 – 1.484kg (+/- 2%)

Technology:

3T Wheel Technology

Discus wheels have 25mm wide rims that provide an ideal platform for today’s wider-section road and gravel tyres. You can run these wheels at a lower inflation pressure for better rider comfort and endurance with no penalty to speed.

Team Stealth wheels have all-carbon-fibre rims and up-to-date aerodynamic profiles, so you won’t be slowed by wind drag or thrown offline by gusts.

The 3T linear+ system unites the best all-round techniques for building robust, responsive and lightweight wheels which in normal use will give you years of riding pleasure.

Full-Aero Wider Rims

3T Discus wheels have 25mm rims which are the new, wider standard for today’s breed of fatter, lightweight tyres.

A wider rim lets you run the latest race-weight tyres at lower pressure. The tyre’s wider, shorter contact patch with the road surface gives you more grip and comfort than traditional narrow tyres at high inflation pressures.

At the same time, 3T rims are aerodynamically profiled for low drag at typical yaw angles.

This means with Discus wheels you get;

  • More comfort
  • Better handling control
  • Less rolling resistance
  • Reduced incidence of punctures
  • Low and stable wind drag

Linear+ Optimized Build

3T linear+ system optimizes all-round build quality. Discus wheels have straight spokes that run directly from hub to nipple. Spoke ends locate perfectly square in the purpose-designed hubs; and at the nipple end, the rim drillings are angled perfectly in line with the spoke.

Nipples are internal, so rim drillings are no wider than needed to pass the spoke through. This benefits strength, appearance, and aerodynamics. Nipples are screwed on upside-down, bearing on the rim’s internal surface via a cup washer. This distributes the load evenly on the rim so spokes can safely be done up tighter.

Compared with traditional wheels built with J–bend spokes, 3T linear+ have;

  • Better load distribution
  • Better spoke alignment
  • Less drag
  • Better durability

Asymmetric Rim

The 3T Linear+ system is further enhanced in some models by asymmetric rims.

Front wheels with disc brakes, as well as rear wheels (with or without discs), have off-centre hub flanges. On one side the spokes are at a steeper bracing angle, so they must be tensioned more. The 3T asymmetric rim compensates for this by reducing the difference in bracing angle between the two sides.

Spoke tensioning is more equal to either side, making a better-performing, more resilient wheelset with better lateral stiffness. Linear+ ensures that rim drillings are perfectly aligned to meet these demanding mechanical requirements.

Both the 58mm and 32mm rims have an asymmetric structure and double-angled spoke drillings, for a perfectly balanced wheelset. Additionally, 3T Discus hubs have double-cross spokes on both sides. Opposite spokes on the same side are perpendicular to each another, so directly opposed. This equalizes spoke load under torque for better power transfer without spoke wind-up, a key benefit when braking is effected at the hub, as well as when accelerating.

Taken together, these measures result in;

  • Reduced wheel dish
  • Reduced L-R spoke-tension difference
  • Greater lateral strength
  • Optimal torque transfer
  • Minimal spoke wind-up when braking and accelerating

Modular Hub Spindles

3T Discus hubs have a light-alloy, oversize spindle with modular end-caps. The modular end-caps allow you to easily change from quick-release to thru-axle, and back again. You can use your 3T wheelset on several bikes of different configurations:

  • Front: QR 100 mm or TA 15 x 100 mm
  • Rear: QR 135 mm; TA 135 x 12 mm; TA 142 x 12 mm

Advanced Carbon-Fibre Technology

3T’s mastery of carbon-fibre design and manufacture means production of the most advanced rims in the business.

3T Discus rims are constructed with top-grade carbon-fibre, with proprietary resins custom-formulated for each product.

Manufacture involves high-accuracy lamination and high-pressure, low-temperature, long-cycle curing times. Production flow is traced from raw materials to finished product for end-to-end quality assurance.

As a result, 3T rims have;

  • Exceptional strength-to-weight ratio
  • Superb impact resistance
  • Extended service life

Note: DiffLock seat clamp fits only saddles with 7mm round-section rails. Saddles with oval rails require Ionic oval caps.

Features:

  • Shaft Material: Carbon
  • Head Material: AL-Alloy
  • Finish: UD Gloss Black
  • Set Back: 25
  • Bolts: Stainless Steel
  • Weight: 265g (27.2x350mm)

3T Ionic 25 Team Stealth Comfort Post

This new innovative post design features key details like the sophisticated and robust, exclusive DiffLock saddle clamp. It’s all here due to the placement the seat clamp assembly in line with the seatpost for zero setback. Thankfully the creative bike-parts design crew with 3T thought this through and developed the new Ionic 25 Team Comfort Post to be a more compact style design. Thus solving those bike fit issues that corollate to not only your seatpost, but your stem handlebar as well.

So if your like many athletes seeking outright speed favor this more forward position on the bike. Some frame designers are also specifying a slacker seat tube so riders can set their bike up with an inline post, which is lighter than a setback post. The splined alloy DiffLock coupling is a highly-accurate method of setting saddle angle needing only lightweight clamping by side-mounted bolts. It is especially useful for fine adjustment of saddle setback, which can be done without impacting saddle angle.

They have also developed the 3T Ionic Team Post is fabricated with carbon fiber with a shot-peened, black-anodized finish along with a kick ass white graphic design to keep it lighter weight, with the super cool modern looking white stripe.

Also for the Ionic diameter size options, they provide the two most popular sizes of 27.2mm which I feel is ideal because it helps with a little extra compliance for super bumpy areas out there. While the more versatile Ionic 0 gets a second diameter of 31.6mm as well, with the three lengths of, 280, 350, 420mm.

Bos Deville Enduro Fork – Upgrated

BOS Deville enduro suspension_fork

Borrowing ever more from their motorsports division, the all-new BOS Deville gets a ton of new internal tech to handle the ups and downs of enduro racing, a new crown to make it stiffer, and optimized lowers to shave grams and, more importantly, make it stiffer.

The fork will offer external high and low speed compression and low speed rebound, but there’s a lot more adjustment available. A third lever up top creates platform, and air volume (but not what you expect) can be adjusted with spacers…

On top of the fork you’ll find three knobs. The silver one handles low speed compression, which is what you find on most forks these days. It works by compressing the spring that pushes a needle into the low speed flow orifice. More spring compression means it’s harder for oil flow to push the needle out of the way, which adds more damping to the system for slower low speed compression under normal ebbs and flows of rolling along. It also reduces sensitivity to the little stuff. Or open it up to make it react faster and feel more sensitive.

The black one under it handles high speed compression and works by raising or lowering the end position that the low speed needle can push back to. Lower the stop point and it can’t open as far under a big hit because oil flow is more limited, so the fork will feel harsher on big hits. Raise it and it lets the needle push back farther to open the port wider, softening the blow. There’s also a non-adjustable high speed compression shim stack in the system.

These two work in conjunction with a Frequency Control Valve (FCV) to inhibit rider-induced motion. Essentially, the FCV Mass appears to be an inertia-based piece that’s kept covering a flow port under soft movements (like those you’d place on the fork when standing to pedal), but then opens as soon as the lowers start moving from an impact. Sounds similar to the Brass Mass Fox used to have, but it’s located much higher up in the damping system here.

Lastly, there’s the Rapid Platform Adjustment Barrel, which is controlled by the red lever under the LSC/HSC knobs. This one opens or closes a port behind the compression needle, essentially blocking most of the oil flow and making the fork drastically firmer. Not fully locked, but very firm.BOS Deville enduro suspension_fork

On the bottom is the low speed rebound adjustment knob, which works by moving a needle in or out of the return port…pretty much standard operation.

A few other things make this fork different than before…and different than most of what’s out there. First, there’s two methods of bottom out control – a hydraulic rebound stop that drastically slows the fork through the last 15mm of travel and helps provide mid-stroke support; and a foam bump stop using a special material that they say virtually eliminates any feeling of bottom out.

Second, it uses a pressurized damping cartridge that relies on a spring-backed piston to maintain oil pressure inside the system. SR Suntour has something similar in their Durolux R2C2 PCS cartridge, and it uses the spring in lieu of a fully sealed bladder system or nitrogen backed IFP like what’s typically found on rear shocks. And BOS’ system can be fully bled with minimal effort.

Third, there are negative air spring spacers. There’s been a lot of attention paid to increasing the size of the negative air spring in forks lately (Fox and Rockshox both announced such things just before Sea Otter), but this is the first time we’ve seen volume spacers for the negative air chamber. BOS offers three different spacer sizes, letting you fine tune the first third of travel without affecting the mid- and end-stroke like a positive air chamber spacer would. It’s a clever way of adding user-friendly tuning. To balance the air pressure between positive and negative, they’ve moved the check valve to the “zero” spot, so both chambers equalize when the fork is under no compression…you know, like when it’s leaning against your bike rack and you’re pumping it up. No more cycling it through its range to get the pressures set correctly.

The 27.5″ fork will come with 110mm Boost axles only, gets 35mm stanchions, and has travel options of 150mm, 160mm and 170mm. Should be available early summer.

Wolf Tooth Components Limited Edition all black ReMote LA

Based on the performance of the Wolf Tooth Components ReMote alone, we know you already want one – assuming you have a compatible dropper post. It’s hard to imagine a much better version of a dropper post lever. That is, unless you’re picky about the looks. The original ReMote and ReMote LA are hardly offensive with a mostly black anodized finish with white laser etched graphics, but if you act fast you could score a ReMote in full stealth mode. The special edition is extremely limited though, so if you want one you should drop onto the WTC site as quickly as possible…

With the exception of the all black finish, the Limited Edition ReMote is the same stellar dropper lever that is almost universally loved. This particular edition is the ReMote LA for light action which uses a 10mm longer lever arm to reduce actuation force by 33%.

That makes it the preferred choice of droppers like the 9Point8 Fall Line, Easton Haven/RaceFace Turbine, Thomson, and Fox Transfer, though it will work with almost every other mechanical dropper as well. On the bottom of the lever you’ll still find the huge ball bearing pivot for silky smooth actuation, and there are mounting options for SRAM Matchmaker X, Shimano I-Spec I/II and A/B, and standard bars.

The only catch is that there have only been 75 of the Stealth ReMote LA levers made with no guarantees on more coming in the future. Pricing is the same as the standard ReMote LA at $69.95 for the 22.2mm bar clamp version.

3T Accelero 40 Team Wheelset – Stealth Review

ACCELERO CARBON

Accelero 40 Stealth is a light, strong clincher wheel with outstanding aerodynamic performance shaped by the same windtunnel studies as the mighty Mercurio tubular wheel.

The structure of the aero rim (43mm deep x 23mm wide) is carbon-fiber, which is bonded to a 6000-series alloy tire bed/brake track extrusion. This means the rim is light, and braking is effective using standard brake blocks for alloy rims. The structural carbon-fiber rim is thicker where it mates with the alloy tire bed, conferring great strength where it’s needed to locate the spokes. Standard Sapim CX-Ray spokes with alloy nipples (18 front, 24 rear) effectively sustain the high tension needed for a stiff, high-performance wheel. Accelero 40 Stealth is the ideal wheel for all-conditions use with the best clincher tires available today, and features our elegant Stealth finish in Matte Black. Separate versions for Campagnolo and Shimano/SRAM.

Prologo updates road, mountain bike saddles w/ CPC Airing vibration damping

Prologo introduced CPC sections on their saddles a few years back, putting a grippy, vibration damping material shaped like tiny tentacles. It’s used in F1 to reduce fatigue, and they put it on their gloves’ palms, too. Last fall, they upgraded it to CPC Airing to improve its performance and enhance air flow to help control heat buildup while you’re riding. At that time, it was only available on their top level “Nack” models with carbon rails. Now, you can get CPC Airing on their Tirox alloy-railed saddles for road and mountain, too…

All of their road models are now available in both Nack and Tirox editions with CPC Airing. On the mountain side, look for it on the SCRATCH X8, NAGO X10 and the new XZERO, shown at the top. All of them are available in black or white.

THM Carbone Tibia Road Stem

THM Carbone Tibia stem

TIBIA ROAD

PRODUCT OVERVIEW

Tibia is a total re-think of the stem, that humble but critical connection from the steerer to the handlebar.

Tibia sets a new benchmark in carbon fabrication: an ideal choice of fiber, following the natural principle of least tension differences, makes the stem super-stiff yet forgiving to ride, with excellent damping to soak up road buzz.

Extremely lightweight at less than 80 g, and with a streamlined shape inspired by natural forms, Tibia provides an optimal aerodynamic connection between the handlebar and the wheel. New clamping hardware in Ti and aluminum ensures that the carbon fibers run end-to-end without being severed by bolt piercings. Also the faceplate is made of carbon with high sophisticated very small structural elements.

The high quality of the carbon fabrication needs only buffing to a satin polish, a finish that eliminates a clearcoat and saves a few grams.

Race Face Aeffect 29in SL Wheelset

Aeffect SL 29in For Sale/CompetitiveCYCLIST

FAST IS FUN.

Wagon wheels have had their detractors from the beginning. “Too flexi,” “wander on climbs,” “don’t track right”—we’ve heard it all. But in the end, they’re just faster than their stunted counterparts, and when it comes to XC speed, fast is fun. Race Face’s Aeffect SL set embodies the speed-first ethos of twenty-niners in a hoop whose design balances width against weight, going a tad wider than traditional XC models without falling victim to the rim-width arms race currently gripping the enduro world.

That’s not to say the Affect rims are tiny, at 24mm, their internal width eclipses the standard external width of cross-country race model from just a few years ago. This Race Face setup will better accommodate slightly larger tires, allowing for higher air volume, lower PSI, increased traction, and an additional layer of cushion for sopping up trail chatter. Since they’re branded Aeffect, you can rest assured that they’re also tough as hell.

The 29in rims are laced to their own Trace hubs. The Trace model doesn’t quite have the lightning-strike engagement of the brand’s new Vault freehub, but that’s just indicative of their different recommended uses. Since it’s featured on an XC model, the Trace hub’s three pawls and 9.2-degree engagement are more than equal to the needs of endurance events and long periods spent at speed. The Vault’s faster engagement is nice if you’re muscling big-travel enduro sleds over stop-and-start rocky cruxes, but the Aeffect SL’s Trace hubs do the trick when low weight and high speed are the order of the day.

Ibis 935 29 Carbon Wheelset

Ibis 935 Carbon 29 Wheels

935 Carbon Wheels

Price: $1799

Ibis built these up to provide the ultimate light weight option for XC and trail riders. The carbon Ibis 935 rims can accommodate a range of tire sizes, making them very adaptable. They also feature a lower cross section height, which provides improved impact resistance. Ibis made changes to the layup, incorporating new layers of carbon/ epoxy pre-preg into their original composite. The 935’s asymmetric design allows for higher spoke tension, providing increased stiffness and power transfer. By combining these improvements, they made the 935 30% and 7.5% lighter than the previous generation.

At the center of the carbon Ibis wheels, they built the 935 up not only with unbelievable bomber carbon but Industry Nine’s iconic Torche hubs hold it all together. The front hub has dual bearings that each have external o-ring seals with a high strength asymmetric design. The Ibis rear utilizes four bearings, external Teflon seals, and a silicone freehub seal. Driven by 120 points of engagement and a dual 3 pawl system, the hubs deliver spectacular three-degree engagement.

All these 935 elements for the 29 set come together to create a light and versatile wheelset that continues to exceed expectations.

Easton’s gravel cockpit features EA70 AX, EC70 AX Drop Bar options

easton ec70 ax flared gravel cyclocross drop handlebar

Borrowing shapes from their ultralight MCD E100 carbon bar, the new AX drop bars bring a much wider flare to their new “Adventure Cross” series.

Two models will be offered, the aluminum EA70 AX and the carbon fiber EC70 AX. They use the same top shape and 80mm reach of the MCD, but push the drops’ flare from 4º to a whopping 16º.

easton ea70 ax_flared gravel adventure-drop-handlebar

That makes them wide enough to all but eliminate any wrist contact with the upper part of the bar when you’re trying to go aero on the rough stuff. That figure, says Easton, is the widest they could go and still give you full control of brake and shift levers.

easton ea70 ax adventure drop bar

Both bars have a 120mm drop and 80mm reach and come in 40, 42 and 44 cm widths measured center to center at the hoods. The drops’ flare adds 68mm to the overall width. The EC70 AX comes in at a claimed 220g (42cm), and the EA70 adds 70g to come in at 290g.

Shimano PRO Koryak Dropper Seatpost released at Eurobike 16

Shimano PRO Koryak Dropper Seatpost released at Eurobike

Pro Koryak Components

With the new Shimano Pro Koryak Dropper Seatpost, it falls into the existing component brand, they had already made as their affordable mountain bike cockpit with their alloy XC & trail line-up. But now to add to Shimano stems, bars, and fixed posts, they are introducing a new part to get the most out of technical off-road riding. The cable-actuated setup gives mountain bikers 120mm of infinite saddle adjustment with a integrated cockpit option and stealth routing.

PRO Koryak dropper seatpost_Shimano mtb cockpit components

The new Pro setup could be a pretty important development as it is the first suspension component (the air cartridge at its heart) to come under their umbrella. It’s not clear whether they set up a new division just to deal with the Pro cartridge design or brought specialists into their regular Pro cockpit component design team.

Shimano PRO Koryak -bikegear.com

In any case the alloy Koryak is said to offer a smooth action, paired with a fast rebounds via its replaceable air cartridge. That gives the Koryak post infinitely adjustable 120mm of throw, with diameters available in 30.9 or 31.6mm and a zero offset head. In addition to the cartridge, Shimano bushings will be readily available to make them easy to service for smooth drop action for a long time.

PRO Koryak Dropper remote

The Pro works with their own integrated two bar mounted remotes depending on your cockpit setup. A typical two-position up/down thumb lever can be mounted on the top of the bar on either side in addition to your normal controls. Or a more push-button Pro lever that mounts via I-Spec II to the left brake for those running 1x drivetrains or new Di2 Synchro Shift setup. Either way the Pro setup runs on their Optislick cable and housing for a smoothly-actuated, internal routing setup.

The Pro claims a total system weight of 520g, including the remote and cable/housing. (It’s worth noting when you compare weights that sometimes only post weight is quoted.) They will be available later this autumn through regular dealer channels.

Bike Yoke Revive Innovative Dropper Seatpost

Bike Yoke Revive Dropper Post

Revive Post is the solution…

The Bike Yoke Revive dropper seatpost design engineers have come back with a unique and innovative solution to the issues with wanting to move your seat up and down. It was a not so subtle hint Bike Yoke had a model in the works after releasing a couple of better designed remote levers this summer.

Their Revive utilizes a different hydraulic lockout design that eliminates most of the pitfalls of the currently standard Internal Floating Piston layout. This new design allows you to on-the-fly bleed off any air that gets where it shouldn’t be (the most often reason to need for a post rebuild), and allows for easy servicing of bushings and guide pins (anti-rotating) at home without opening the hydraulics.

The Revive concept got it’s start becuase most models use a similar tech solution to slide up and down and locking in place, relying on a very precise Internal Floating Piston (IFP) that must be perfectly sealed or subject to failure, also keeping the oil & air separate. When they don’t stay totally sealed, air gets in and your seatpost bounces up and down like suspension, necessitating a rebuild.

So to combat that they eliminated the IFP design all together for their Revive. Instead they went with a design that is more simple, and lets excess air bleed into the shaft instead of into the oil. That means that production is a bit easier, and by incorporating a bleed valve in the head of the post, when air goes where it shouldn’t, and you post gets squishy, you can bleed it out in a couple of seconds tool-free. An added benefit is that they were able to use just 2 dynamic seals, for super smooth movement and no friction sticking, and still get a hydraulic setup that is more stable and longer lasting.

Bike Yoke Revive Dropper Seatpost

The key feature is of course that Revive valve, or reset button on the head. Press it, and push the post down by hand and the hydraulic circuit is totally reset. Back to good as new without having to even take it off your ride.

The Revive also builds in a bit more strength/stiffness by mounting the upper bushing right to the lower tube instead of an add-on cap for better performance with the same stack height. The one-piece lower tube also lends better alignment for the 6 keyed pins that keep it from rotating. They have designed the Revive so that the bushings and keyway pins that will wear out with use are as user-serviceable as possible. They can both be replaced without messing with the hydraulics and can be done by anyone who can operate a set of retaining ring pliers.

BikeYoke Revive _sizing

The Revive will come in two travel lengths, 125 & 160mm, and in two seatpost diameters for each travel: 30.9 & 31.6mm. They can be operated by either a 1x specific remote like their Triggy that takes the place of a left shifter, or an old-style up/down push button remote.

The 125mm in 30.9mm diameter is claimed to weigh 470g, while the remote without cables adds another 25g.

bike yoke lever

Their seatpost is slated to be available in January/February 2017, in time for early spring riding. They will be offering a pre-order deal that will open up just after Eurobike in a couple of weeks that will run throughout the month of September. Anyone who pre-orders then will lock-in one for the beginning of the year delivery and is said to expect some freebies thrown in with their order. Pricing on the Revive pre-order has been set at 350€ for the 125mm travel version and 370€ for the longer 160mm version. Both prices include a Triggy remote, a free I-Spec adapter or Shifty SRAM pulley, and an upgrade to ti saddle clamp bolts. They are also inclusive of German/EU VAT and free worldwide shipping.

WTB Ci31 Carbon Rims get wider, and City Slicks now under WTB brand

WTB Ci31 Rims

The Ci31 with tire shown below in all it’s splendor!

WTB has been on it lately…

As the bike technology is moving like the speed of lightning, with what seems like daily changes with industry standards, you better buck up or get left behind. Which is why they’ve already added a couple wider options for the WTB’s KOM and Frequency alloy model line. And have now increased the width of the WTB carbon models, as well, not wanting to fall behind, they gave it a simple (Ci31) acronym for it’s name.

The new Ci31 gets its name from the material for Carbon and the internal width of 31 millimeters. Available now in 27.5 and Ci31 29er sizes, claimed weights are 455g and 490g, designed for tire widths ranging from 47mm to 72mm. One huge bonus that hopefully other manufactures will catch on, as the Ci31’s are “floor pump tubeless friendly” and rated for XC, Trail and Enduro…

WTB Ci31 test

WTB Ci31 Rim Pricing is $599.95 for each, and are available on their website as this get’s posted.
WTB Ci31 Carbon Rims

Now you can put together that custom build list and check some seriously sweet rims off the list. As the Ci31 will be very versatile. Unfortunately the summer day’s are coming to a close in the higher alpine zones next month, but plenty of opurtunity to put the Ci31 setup to use in the beautiful desert regions. The Ci seems like a perfect fit for places like Sedona AZ. As they wanted the Ci31 to be diverse first and foremost.

WTB Thick Slick Tires

Aside from the MTB oriented Rim setup, their past years Freedom brand will now be melding into their own brand name, which brings their classic looking ThickSlick urban tire under the naming scheme. As such, the WTB Race keeps its name, Sport becomes Comp, and the others (Elite and Deluxe) fuse into a new Flat Guard. Those will have three layers of various flat and puncture protection, the outer most simply being an extra (and extra thick) layer of rubber under the entire tire. They found that to be one of the most effective forms of protection, and it helps the tire last longer, too. Retail ranges from $29.95 to $36.95. The link for the Ci31 27.5, as well as the new tire and Ci31 29 models below.

Alto Velo CCX40 Wheels w/ disc hubs ready for cyclocross

Alto CCX40 Rear-carbon-disc-brake-road-cyclocross-wheels

CCX40 Wheels w/ disc hubs

The Florida-based startup Alto Velo debuted their prototypes at Interbike with a disc brake version, with hopes to have them out early this year. That timeline came and went, but now, finally here.

Those design changes over the past year were done to ensure that their disc brake hub was good for anyone that needed a disc brake hub, regardless of discipline…

Alto Velo CCX40 Disc Wheelset

The CCX40 above and top,  uses a custom 40mm deep carbon fiber rim. They kept their interchangeable axle design that lets you change out from QR to 12mm or 15mm thru axles in less than a minute. Each axle type does require a specific axle as opposed to end caps and spacers – it’s replacing one part with another single part, all of which are available separately.

The front hub uses the oversized flange on the non-drive side to make up for the offset required to make room for the disc brake rotor. Their testing showed that the widest offset and tallest flange isn’t necessarily the best solution because of what it does to spoke tension, and it’s doubly challenging to make a really good front disc brake wheel because there’s less width to play with. So, they did a lot of testing to balance ride quality with lateral stiffness at the right point. The result is an almost equal tension from left to right, which they say combines with their ultra-precise internals to make for a very smooth, balanced and strong setup.

Alto AX26 alloy disc cyclocross wheels

The AX26 is the alloy rim option (and only tubeless ready option) with disc brakes. The alloy models are tubeless ready, and they’re made by another company in Jacksonville, FL (just up the road from Alto Velo’s HQ). It’s a custom drilled version of their 26mm deep Aileron.

Anytime they made changes to the hub, they had to change the rim, because the UD fibers in the carbon are all specific to the bracing angle of the spoke and the lacing pattern. So every time they made a change, they wanted to see it proven on the computer but also in real life. In true engineering fashion, they overanalyzed everything causing them to be six months late.

Alto CCX56 Carbon CX wheels

The CCX56 offers a deeper 56mm carbon fiber option for aero pursuits. The carbon models are made by one of the top Asian suppliers using Alto Velo’s own molds and design, which is necessary to work with their unique spoke angles. These are not officially tubeless ready yet (they’re working on it), but they’re using a new multi-angle drilling pattern to match both the bracing and lacing angles to have exactly linear placement of the spoke – there’s no bending tension or kinks in the spokes. That’s why they really strongly recommend buying a complete from them rather than just the hubs for your own custom build.

Weights are lower than they expected, with all of the gram here, gram there trimming helping shave 50-60g of comparable hubs from competitors. The rear is 270g and front is 114g. Complete wheelset weights and specs are:

Alto AX26-alloy graph

AX26 claimed weights are 707g front, 878g rear.

Alto Velo carbon rims

The carbon options weigh in at (claimed):

  • CCX40 Clincher – 693g F / 873g R
  • CTX40 Tubular – 591g F / 771g R
  • CCX56 Clincher – 750g F / 926g R
  • CTX56 Tubular – 598g F / 774g R

All are laced 24 front (2x/2x) and 28 rear (radial/2x). They’ve already shipped the first few sets, and they’re available now through their website. Demo sets will be at Interbike’s demo day, too. Retail ranges from $1,385 for ATX26 alloy, carbon starts at $2,050 CCX40 and runs up to $2,195 CCX56 depending on depth. Choose from eight logo decal colors.

Mavic Crossmax Elite WTS 27.5 Wheel w/ Pulse Tire

Mavic Crossmax Elite WTS 27.5 Rear Wheel and Pulse Tire -red

Crossmax Elite WTS 27.5 Wheel

Mavic has developed a new (wheel-tire-system) or “WTS” to help make your life a tad bit simpler. While it may seem easy to get bogged down in the myriad acronyms peppering the Mavic Crossmax Wheel spec sheet, the only thing that really matters is that the mash of letters and numbers results in a lightweight wheelset that’s fast enough to rip any XC course and strong enough to withstand the bumps along the way. The star of the show though is undoubtedly their Inter Spoke Milling 4 Dimensions (ISM 4D) process, which is a mainstay in reducing rotational weight and enabling the Crossmax to accelerate in a snap and hold speed across varying terrain.

While Mavic’s ISM Elite 4D is responsible for keeping rim weight low, the Instant Transfer System 4 (ITS-4) rear hub ensures that all that efficiency isn’t wasted by sluggish, unresponsive engagement. IST-4 is a four pawl system that alternates engagement between two pairs of pawls. Since both pairs engage at different points in the freehub’s rotation, the gap between engagement points falls to just 7.5 degrees of free play.

Mavic Crossmax Elite WTS 27.5 Wheel with Pulse Front Tire

The Crossmax rims incorporate the Universal Standard Tubeless (UST) design, which eliminates tubes and tape while running tubeless with their UST tires and is compatible with virtually all tubeless and clincher tires. This particular WTS wheel comes outfitted with their own Pulse 27.5 tire, which features harder compounds (55 center strip and 50 shoulders) than all-mountain tires like the Crossmax Quest XL (50 and 40, respectively). These harder compounds privilege reduced rolling resistance over grip, so they’re well-suited to the XC and light trail duties it prefers.

Crank Brothers Mallet E LS Enduro Pedal w/ long spindle option

Crank Brothers Mallet E LS enduro pedal

Mallet E LS Pedal

The crew at Crank Brothers have come up with a great option for those mountain bikers who prefer a bit wider stance to improve balance and control. For that, the new (Long Spindle) version of the Crank Brothers Mallet E provides an extra 5mm per side while retaining all of the upgraded features of their 2016 lineup.

The standard Mallet E has a 52mm Q-factor, while the new Long Spindle pushes that to 57mm. Step past the break for a visual comparison and a look inside the pedal body…

Crank Brothers Mallet E Long Spindle pedal

Standard features for both Crank Brothers LS versions include a concave platform with six adjustable pins per side and ribs for foot traction, chamfered Mallet E edges to reduce rock strikes (or, at least, their impact forces) and a customizable release angle (by switching cleats from left to right foot, it’s all in the pedal instructions).

crank-brothers-mallet-e-ls-long-spindle-enduro-pedal

Inside, you’ll find a Mallet Enduro cartridge bearing (1), an Igus glide bearing (2) and double seal system (3) to keep the crud out. On the end of the Mallet E spindle is an alloy end cap that threads in, preventing the pedal body from accidentally flying off should anything else come loose (as could happen on some of their first generation eggbeaters).

The spindle is forged chromoly steel, the spring and wing is stainless steel, and the body is 6061-T6 aluminum. Claimed weight is 465g per pair, retail is $/€165 with a five year warranty and this fancy new Mallet E electric blue/black color combo.

SwissStop Catalyst Disc Brake Rotors

Catalyst Disc Brake Rotors

Most times, a catalyst is used to start something. For Swissstop’s latest product, it’s meant to slow you down in a hurry. The new Swissstop Catalyst disc setps combine both the SUS410 stainless steel braking surface with a 7075T6 aluminum spider in a carefully shaped, extensively tested pattern. They say the result is stiff, minimizes vibrations and sheds heat quickly…

SwissStop-Catalyst-Disc-brake-Rotor-heat-map2

Digital Catalyst models were created, tested and simulation verified to prove that what they created in their computers reflected reality, then used that program to optimize their own design. It measured for both heat and stiffness, showing where stresses were placed on the Catalyst during tracking forces. This let them also optimize the shape of the holes in the brake track to minimize pad vibrations, which hopefully means they’ll be very quiet during braking.

SwissStop-Catalyst-Disc-brake-Rotor-heat-map

The two-piece design proved to be best at controlling heat, tested through CFD before heading to the trails.

SwissStop Catalyst Disc Rotor-brake-force

Click to enlarge. All images, graphs and rotor data from Swissstop.

Lab testing showed the Catalyst required less hand force than a competing model, and they resulted in shorter distances to come to hault. Part of that comes from adding a little extra material to the braking surface, so they’re not the lightest on the market, but they say the performance improvement is worth a few extra grams:

SwissStop Catalyst Disc Rotor force

The 140mm and 203mm Catalyst are 1.85mm thick, the 160 and 180 are 1.80mm thick. All are compatible with sintered and organic pad compounds, but they’re optimized for use with their EXOtherm brake pads.

Pricing and any remaining details to come at Eurobike at the end of August.

Stan’s No Tubes Custom MK3 MTB Wheels

STANS NO TUBES CUSTOM DECALS

Custom MK3 Wheels/Decals

After updating the Stan’s No Tubes Arch, Crest and Flow models last April to be wider, lighter and stiffer, now they let you build their complete hoops, custom just the way you like them. You can even pick the Stan’s No Tubes Custom logo and nipple color to match your frame or components.

To have options, and make it custom to your bike is pretty sweet for sure…what takes the idea over the top is their website custom configurator. It’s kinda similar to Trek’s project one system, where details can be custom selected by the end customer, not necessarily what the shop brought in for their store display.

Stan’s No Tubes Custom MK3 decals

The Stan’s configurator allows for you to build the front and rear separately, with pricing depending on options. Choose from any of those three MK3 models listed above, then pick your hub, axle type, spoke type, nipple color and decal color. Pay for it, sit back for 2-3 days, then go ride your fancy new hoops.

Eightpins new Integrated Dropper Seatpost Syntace /Liteville design

syntace liteville eightpins integrated seatpost

Dropper seatposts have evolved, to make them far more durable and reliable than when the dropper concept first originated, but unfortunately one issue is still prominent, which is binding when a seatpost collar get’s over tightened. Many modern posts have tried to address this with more robust outer cylinders or tricky internals, but the fact remains, if you over tighten your collar, things may not work as well as they should. Eightpins, in an apparent collaboration with Syntace, will be introducing a completely different take on it at Eurobike. Judging by the fuzzed out photo of it, it could involve frame integration, or possible an expanding system that locks the post into place by wedging against the inside of the seat tube. We’ll release more info, and a possible release date, when it’s available…

Hunt Adventure Sport Disc 650b Mason Wheelset

Hunt Wheels Mason X-Hunt 650b Adeventure Sport 275 wheelset road

Part of the development on Mason Cycles’s new aluminum and titanium Bokeh Adventure Sport multi-surface Road Plus bikes was the advent of high quality fat and lightweight wheels and tires. To handle the wheel duties they collaborated once again with their Sussex, England neighbors at Hunt Bike Wheels to develop an affordable performance alloy wheelset. The resulting Mason x Hunt 650b AdventureSport disc wheels were specially designed for the recent breed of quick moving adventure bikes, that can fit around 50mm wide, high volume slicks or some light duty knobbies, and Hunt rates them for road and light trail.

Hunt Mason-X Hunt 650b wheelset rear-hub

The new 650b Adventure Sport Disc wheels feature a gravel road and trail ready 25mm wide external/20mm internal rim to provide support for tires like the new 47mm Horizon slicks or 2.0″ Ranger knobbies recently introduced by WTB. Going in either direction you can build the wheels up to add cushion and float to mostly hard surfaces or more traction for loose dirt road and trail riding.

The wheels are designed for the FarFast concept and stick with the same proven construction and tech as their previous Mason x Hunt 4 Season Disc wheels. That means tubeless ready, with rim tape and tubeless valves pre-installed. They’ll even provide the option to set the wheels up and ship them with one or two tubeless tire options already installed with sealant to eliminate the hassle, which is an excellent service and priced cheaper than you can buy the tires and sealant separately.

Hunt Mason X-Hunt 650b Adeventure Sport 275 road rim

Tech wise the 6061 rims use an asymmetric disc and tubeless specific profile for even spoke tension that is 24mm deep. They are laced up with 28 triple butted round J-bend spokes and brass nipples for durability and serviceability. The wheels use the same alloy Centerlock 4Season Disc hubset set up for 12×100, 12x142mm thru-axles and include 15mm front adapters in the box. QR and 135mm t-a adapters are also available separately as spares to fit pretty much any bike. The hubs use an alloy Shimano cassette body with a steel insert, but a SRAM XD driver is also available, and feature Japanese EZO bearings.

The 650b wheelset weighs in at a claimed 1579g. Wheels get a matte black ano finish and laser etched graphics on both rim and hubs.

Hunt does a good job of paying attention to the details, and the result is a wheelset that will last you a long time and perform through the toughest weather conditions. They even offer a pretty solid 60 day ride & return testing warranty so you can be confident in your purchase and even have a separate crash replacement discount.

Hunt wheels Mason X-Hunt Adeventure-Sport 27.5

The wheels are available now for pre-order with a retail price of £400. To get a set for early October delivery you can to pay a refundable £70 deposit to reserve your wheels.

WTB Frequency i29 Rims get 29mm wider internal width

WTB Frequency i29 and KOM i29 wider mountain-bike-rims

WTB’s tubeless ready mountain bike rim collection adds a new 29mm internal width to two of its families. The new Frequency i29 joins 19, 21, 23 and 25mm inside width options, and the WTB KOM i29 tops out the 21, 23 and 25mm widths. For both Frequency and KOM, you’ll find the new wider i29 measurement on both 27.5 and 2-niner rims.

All WTB Frequency rims use their I-beam construction and 4D spoke hole drilling to maintain a robust profile ride after ride. The Frequency will retail for $84.95 and weigh in at 570g (27.5″) and 606g (29er). The KOM rims are their lighter weight option, hitting the scales at a claimed 495g (27.5″) and 527g (29er) and retailing for $100. The KOM’s lose the I-beam and get slightly thinner walls to make the KOM a little racier than the Frequency brethren…hence the name KOM for (king of the mountain). Both are currently available.

Easton EC90 SL Carbon Crankset w/ BB86 /PF30 /BSA30 bottom brackets

2017 Easton EC90 SL Carbon Crankset

EC90 SL BB86 /PF30 /BSA30 Carbon Crankset

Easton Cycling recently unveiled their re-entry into the carbon market. It highlights the 2017 Easton Crankset synergy with their merger with RaceFace by sharing the Cinch chainring attachment design and composite arm construction. After all, if the Easton EC90 are anywhere near what the RaceFace Next have achieved, because they are among the lightest out there, so what a great place to get started. The EC90 weight falls at a mere 442 grams…

2017 Easton EC90 SL Carbon Double Chainring crankset

The EC90 setup comes with a new direct mount ring design that employs narrow/wide specifically tailored to road/cx/gravel applications. The individual tooth profile has moved from the traditional symmetrical shape to more directional specific design with the intention to create a positive chain roller engagement to help with EC90 chain retention, critical to prevent chain bounce over the roughest terrain.

2017 Easton EC90 50t cx road chainring

2017 Easton EC90 SL 50t cyclocross road chainring

All rings feature the Cinch Direct Mount System making a swap between ring sizes or even between double ring configurations a fast and simple procedure. Using the Cinch DM System also provides a significant weight savings by eliminating the material overlap and extra bolt hardware that is required for a traditional spider with chainring configuration.

2017 Easton EC90 SL narrow-wide 1x chainrings

  • The EC90 rings have 47mm chainline with the 129mm spindle, this is the optimal chainline for 135/142mm rear hub spacing which covers all road/CX disc bikes.
  • 47mm chainline gives full access to all gears on your rear cassette with efficient power transfer and minimal running noise.
The BSA30 (left) and BB86 pressfit (right) bottom brackets.
The BSA30 (left) and BB86 pressfit (right) bottom brackets.

The SL chainset don’t have to be paired with Easton’s bottom brackets, as they will generally work with any aftermarket 30mm BB, but some spacers may be required.

Beyond the EC90 SL, they believe Bottom Brackets are an essential part of the bicycle that is often overlooked and forgotten, and see the BB as another opportunity for performance gains and improved efficiency. Typically with any bearing there is a tradeoff between protecting the bearing internals for longevity and bearing seal drag which impact efficiency. For their new BB they developed a seal that achieves a very low level of seal drag while still retaining excellent protection qualities. With their in-house testing procedure where they essentially pour water into the side of the spinning bearings for an entire day non stop, and their new seal proved to have excellent contaminant exclusion.

The PF30 bottom bracket.
The PF30 bottom bracket.

They also use a new thinner low viscosity bearing grease and modified the grease fill to find the perfect balance between durability and minimized running friction. So if you’re going to run the best EC90 Crankset on the market, you should have the performance BB to back it up.

Magura Boltron eMTB USD Inverted 29 /27.5+ Fork meant for e-bikes

Magura Boltron eMTB USD Inverted Suspension Fork 29 /27.5+

Boltron eMTB 29 27.5 + Inverted Fork

Magura has a new inverted suspension design. But don’t get too excited just yet – this Magura Fork isn’t meant for most mountain bikes. No, instead you’ll see the new Magura Boltron gracing the front of mountain bikes that also include a battery. While other suspension companies have been adding more material and stronger steerers to compensate for the increased stress they exert on the front end of the ride, the Boltron is an entirely new beast for sure.

The eMTB is partnered with WP Performance Systems, Magura claims WP’s USD technology has been proven on the moto side, which is a natural fit with the performance of modern e-bikes.

To make the Boltron specific, it’s simply built with a higher degree of strength and stiffness, with less emphasis on weight. Not only are they heavier, but in many cases they can be faster as well which is harder on the components, especially under braking. Along with the stiffer 35mm chassis, apparently different bushings are used to increase overall stiffness. Following that rationale, the Boltron uses a 20 x 110mm thru axle with their trademark T25 tool stashed inside.

Magura Boltron eMTB 29 650b Inverted 120 - 140mm Fork ebike specs

The Boltron eMTB steerer tube is a standard tapered model measuring 1.5″ to 1.125″. While the Boltron will also be offered in 120 and 150mm sizes, both meant for 29″ or 27.5+ wheels. Inside you’ll find internally adjustable compression damping with externally adjustable rebound damping as well as an air spring with automatic negative spring balancing. Given the need for improved braking performance on these rides, the post mount brakes will accept 180mm rotors at a minimum.

We should have more on the Boltron Fork and what would happen if you put it on a regular MTB after Eurobike.

Zonda DB Disc Wheelset

Campagnolo has been quietly working on new brakes to keep up with the latest road bike trends, as perfect sign of things to come, the newest 2017 Campagnolo Zonda is here straight from the Campagnolo tech lab.

2017 Campagnolo Zonda DB Disc front Wheel

Campy is calling it the their first branded disc brake product, the wheels will surely stand as the starting point for helping their Disc Brake Project make it from their Tech Lab to the streets. In fact, the Zonda themselves were born from the Disc Brake Project and represent their take on what they should be. That means the proliferation of an asymmetric design, not just on the rear but on the front as well.

Designed from the ground up for use with disc brakes, the Zonda looks to be a great starting point for rotor style braking.

Campagnolo Zonda DB Disc Rear Wheel

While complete Zonda specs aren’t yet available for the DB set, Campy has provided a snapshot of what to expect. Both the front and rear wheel utilize an asymmetric aluminum rim that is laced to their new aluminum disc brake specific hubs. Built specifically to use that style, the rims use an asymmetric profile that makes use of their Rim Dynamic Balance and MoMag technology to create a rim that has no spoke holes and is as light and balanced as possible. Spoke pattern comes in the form of their Mega G3 lacing with 21 spokes front and rear.

Built with the classic cup and cone bearings, the new Zonda hubs will be offered in both 6 bolt and AFS (their version of Centerlock), and will be compatible with both thru axles and quick release dropouts. The front hub will be compatible with 12 x 100 thru axles and standard 100mm quick releases, while the rear will utilize 12 x 142mm thru axle spacing and will apparently use a special 135mm quick release axle for QR frames.

No word yet on Zonda rim width, tubeless compatibility, pricing, or weights, but Campy claims they are 25g lighter than their closes competitor and more “reactive” when compared to the rim brake version of the same wheel. More detail when it’s available.
