The SIR 9 returns as an all trail dominator. Revised geometry turns the SIR 9 into a modern trail bike set to ride over or through anything that stands in the way. Ride it hard. Ride it fast. After all, it’s made from a truly time-tested material that’s been air hardened and heat treated. The efficient, yet compliant ride quality of the SIR 9 harkens back to a simpler time. A time without linkages and complicated shock settings. A time where all the energy you put into the pedals moves you forward.
..

The Classic Reynolds 853 provides a supple, comfortable ride that will carry you through long days in the saddle. Boost spacing adds improved ride characteristics as well as versatility allowing you to build up your SIR 9 with either 29” wheels for maximum roll over, or 27.5” Plus if ultimate traction and stability are your preference. Adding to the SIR 9’s versatility is the ability to run either geared or single speed with Niner’s eccentric BB. The redesigned bottom bracket and chainstay junction improve ride quality while allowing greater tire clearance. A hidden plate inside the chainstay yoke stiffens and strengthens to improve power transfer. Eighteen mounting points for racks, fenders, bento box, water etc. along with integrated bag mounts means this SIR 9 is ready for the long haul.

Niner pairs the SIR 9 with Shimano’s smooth and precise M8000 11-speed drivetrain that provides a huge gear range to let you tackle steep climbs and speed through the straights and downhills. Shimano M8000 XT brakes deliver predictable power to get you stopped on a dime in any condition. Stan’s NoTubes wheels wrapped in Maxxis Ardent tires roll fast and smooth with confidence inspiring grip that will have you railing corners like a pro. Handling the suspension duties, is the Rock Shox Reba RL fork with Boost spacing, 120mm of travel, and external rebound and compression adjustment. Topping off the SIR 9 is a cockpit by Race Face, and KS Lev dropper post with internal routing.

The new SIR 9 begs the rider to push their limits and to have fun doing it.

Why Cycles Wayward Ti 29+ Hardtail

Why Cycles

First showing was at Sea Otter and it seemed to be a hit, while Why Cycles were taking the opportunity to give the crowds a sneak peek, as show goers got a chance to check out their latest creation for the trail. The new Wayward 29+ titanium is their answer to a supremely capable big tire bike allowing for you to be loaded up for what ever adventure you want to get into.

While it was reported Sea Otter was only the pre-launch of the bike, Why Cycles is now coming back with more details and the ordering opportunity that will get the Wayward into your hands in under a month…

Employing 3/2.5 titanium tubing with 6/4 titanium for the head tube, threaded bottom bracket shell, and machined bits built for their other models, one would assume the Wayward will have just as sweet a ride as their other rides are said to be.

Specifics for the frame include an integrated 42/52mm headset, 73mm BSA bottom bracket, 12 x 148mm Boost axle spacing with a sliding vertical dropout that’s belt drive compatible, three bottle cage mounts with a three pack on the inside of the downtube, rack and fender mounts, and 160mm post mount brakes.

The Wayward’s geometry for the production bike will use 440-455mm chainstays and a 70mm bottom bracket drop. Why Cycles reported this is to offer a more stable ride while keeping that ability to feel like you’re railing corners which becomes a harder to accomplish with tires this big. Coupled with a 68.3° head tube angle and 73.5° seat tube angle, the Wayward looks like an interesting addition to the world of 29+.

For pricing the frame starts at $2,250, which includes the headset, Thomson seat collar and a rear Maxle. While you can add a Rock Shox Pike RCT3 100mm Boost fork to make it a frameset, which bumps it to $2,849. While complete bikes are available in SRAM X01 Eagle for $5,499 or XX1 Eagle for $6,599, both with Rock Shox Pike forks. The DVO Sapphire shown is available as an upgrade for another $100. According to Why Cycles, pre-orders should ship mid-June.

Cotic Solaris Max Steel Hardtail 2017

The UK companies fastest hardtail just got faster, the Cotic is confidence inspiring, agile and fun, with a planted feel at high speeds on the rocks, and carve-it-up traction in the corners. New for the legendary Solaris Max hardtail handling is translated into a Boost width platform with 148mm rear spacing for stiffer, more responsive wheels, thru axle security, and massive tire clearance for up to 27.5 x 3.0″ tires. Add to the stunning new Cotic color options and internal ‘Stealth’ dropper seatpost routing and you have all the hardtail you will ever need.

The new Cotic Solaris 27.5+ mtb sports Metallic Champagne powder coating for the frames for 2017, along with two other options of Gloss Black w/Aqua, or Gloss Black w/Orange great details.

Solaris specs

  • Adaptable head tube was designed with the 44mm standard diameter with an external bottom cup so that it’s compatible for tapered steer tubes, and lower stem stack heights to compensate for the taller front end due to bigger wheel sizing.
  • A 31.6mm diameter seat post is also compatible for a dropper version, the frame accepts external remote or internal “Stealth” routing. It also uses hose clips for the external remote under the top tube, or p-clip bosses for a down tube run for the ‘stealth’ internal option.
  • Bigger diameter Reynolds 853 thin wall steel, uses air hardening technology along with a gusset less DZB down tube and a new signature Oval form top tube.
  • Cotic’s signature series 4130 chromoly wishbone stay rear end, and S-bend chain stays that don’t use a bridge, and Hexten gussets as well to improve overall fatigue life on the hardtail frame.
  • Well accommodated for big mtb tires – plenty of clearance for 3.0″ WTB Trail Boss.
  • Geometry ranges with different fork setups, the minimum is 100mm travel up to 120mm for the longest setup. It also works great with 470 mm rigid forks as well.
  • The 27.5+ geometry numbers capitalize on a longer top tube, with shorter 60-90mm recommended stem length to maintain excellent weight distribution and great trail handling qualities.
  • They discontinued the past years 16″ frame size, as back in 2013 Cotic unveiled the model with the sizes 16″, 17.5″, 19″ and 20.5″. They were focused on making sure all the sizes were still compact as possible to make them huck worthy.
  • Claimed Weight for the Cotic Solaris 19″ size is – 4.9 pounds

2017 Diamondback Mason Pro 27.5 Plus

Diamondback Mason Pro 27.5 Plus

 Diamondback Mason Pro 27.5 Plus

MASON TO FUN!

One of several 2017 Diamondback mountain bikes to catch our astute attention this year is the upcoming ride from the Northwest crowd of designers, the Diamondback Mason. It appears mountain bikes are getting more and more diverse by the minute with their frame and suspension engineering developments. We are just beginning to see creative ideas to push the envelope of traditional design with big wheel bikes and the Mason Pro 27.5 Plus ride shown above will be one of a handful of long travel hardtails for the upcoming summer.

The head engineers at Diamondback felt strongly that they needed a bigger wheel offering that was a bit more capable of handling all of what their local terrain is about, which means it more often than not can be aggressive while at the same time mucky and wet. Which is ultimately where this Diamondback All Mountain hardtail bike actually derived from.

The newest DB ride based out of the Northwest region, also features an All Mountain 6061-T6 Weapons Grade Aluminum frame, in which they supplemented with an additional hydro-formed top tube, along with a formed and butted down tube, to make sure it’s not only stout, but shaves grams off of where it’s not needed. It also uses a tapered head tube, a direct mount front derailleur mount, ISCG tabs and a 148x12mm Boost Spec Dropouts, w/ Replaceable Hanger.

To say the least, this Mason rig is low slung and slack — developed for the modern day shredder out there who needs plenty of efficiency on the uphill pedal sections, but also has the freedom to charge it hard down off the other side with what ever aggressiveness is needed to roll it out at the bottom and do it all over again, lap after lap. The Mason is a departure from the norm with a really slack 66.5° head angle and 16.77 inch chain-stays. They were able to get a lower center of gravity on the bike as well. Making for a purposeful bike both riding up as well as ripping down fast and furious.

The Mason is definitely less cross country style than most of the hardtail models available, having a long-travel Fox 130mm fork to not only soak up any rough element but to make for an easier go at popping the front end up. The Pro all-mountain bike will retail for $2,800 USD for total bike. (but discounted below, while supplies last)
All-mountain Plus Frame
The 6061-T6 DB alloy frame, is available with a Red finish w/sweet graphics design and four total sizes: small 15.5″, medium 17″, large 19″, x-large 21″.

db mason 27.5 plus fork

Component Specs

The Mason ride was developed to be priced right. First item up is the Fox 34 Float Performance 130mm fork to serve well to the AM crowd up front. The second item is the Race Face Aeffect 11 speed cranks that are matched with a single 30t ring combined with a bash guard. Those were then combined with Sram’s new X1 rear derailleur with the matching X1 trigger shifter, while the 11-speed 10-42t cassette, gives you a hardtail to do it all. They have thrown in some DB Blanchard 38R, Tubeless Compatible, 32h rims that are built up with sealed-cartridge-bearing hubs to make for a super strong, but yet light enough weight wheelset to climb with ease. The Shimano Deore M615 disc brakes employ 180mm rotors to provide more than enough power to stop in a hurry. They also specified a KS LEV Integra dropper post that comes with a bar remote, with Race Face’s Ãeffect, 760mm Wide bar and stem to complete the bike build out.

REBEL LYNX 5.5

The 2017 BH Lynx full suspension setup will be the perfect fit for your initiation into the super fun world of BH’s electric powered mountain bikes. With humans having such huge-impressive networks of fun-single-track spread across the globe, the Lynx will be the ideal 27.5er not only on stone riddled forest trails that were challenging on your regular pedal powered mountain bike, but the Lynx’s e-bike power will open up the hardest trails you can blow your mind on.

The Lynx allows you to easily control the bike because the larger-sized wheel reduces the angle of contact on the ground. You will overcome the unevenness which enables you gain speed much faster than ever before.

BH Lynx 5.5

For a contrast this 27.5 Lynx model allows for you to obtain maneuverability on descents, while still rolls amazingly fast, a bit more rigidity and it will allow you to be more aggressive. To sum it up, these frames provide countless possibilities for enjoyment on the trail.

Also the 5.5 geometry and design on the BH full suspension gives it a longer angle, offering increased performance and greater comfort during the ride. Which offers a great responsiveness and the shorter distance between the axles and the rider’s center of gravity provides increased stability.

12-148 THRU-AXLE ‘Boost’
In particular on both 29er and 650b wheels, Merida figured out if paired with a thru-axle the attributes to increase stiffness, make the huge benefits so desirable. Due to the widening of the hub spacing by 6mm, the spoke angles become flatter resulting in a stiffer and stronger wheel. Besides that, the wider hubs and cranks with wider bottom brackets push the chain line further outwards and enable extra short chain stays for a more agile geometry.

X-TAPER HEADTUBE
The best of two worlds: externally shaped head tube with increased diameter at the bottom and weight saving smaller diameter at the top. ‘X-Taper Headtubes’ always come with tapered forks or correct adapters fitted. Result: superb stiffness and precise steering even in the toughest conditions without increasing the weight of the frame unnecessarily.

SMART ENTRY
Internal cable routing perfected: Up to this point, the routing of cables inside frame tubes often had the unwanted side effect that they were able to move and produce noise. Our ‘Smart Entry’ allows the cables to be clamped under tension, resulting in rattle free cables even when it is getting rough. All cable inlets are completely interchangeable to deal with any kind of set up; Di2, hydraulic hoses, brake and gear cable housings etc.

DOWN TUBE EXIT
Due to a large cable exit in the Big Trail downtube, “Down Tube Exit” additionally puts an end to awkward handling of internally routed cables.

INTERNAL CABLE
Elaborately shaped frame designs with special inlets and outlets for internally routed brake and/or shifter cables. “Clean” in a double sense: The bike looks uncluttered while the cables are protected effectively from moisture and dirt.

SMOOTH-WELDING
Besides top functionality, the frames also have to offer a convincing visual appearance. The second welding process during Smooth Welding evens the connecting welding seam – an elaborate concept for a brilliant look without compromises to stability.

LOCK-OUT
The suspension fork and/or the shock unit of your MERIDA bike can be locked directly by moving a lever. This provides an optimum setup e. g. for rides on bumpy surfaces or for powerful sprints – not only during steeper uphill passages!

PROLITE 66 TRIPLE BUTTED ALUMINUM
MERIDA’s premium alloy represents extremely durable and light aluminium of high-end quality. Triple-butted wall thicknesses result not only in exciting frame designs: First of all, they offer an optimum Stiffness-to-Weight (STW) ratio.

HFS – HYDRO FORMING SYSTEM
The mechanical TFS process works from the outside to the inside. In contrast, the complex Hydroforming concept shapes the frame by pushing hot oil under hydraulic high pressure from the inside to the outside. Material: Prolite 66 aluminium.

POST-MOUNT DISC
The friction-free alignment of the brake caliper is considerably eased by direct mounting of the post-mount caliper at the rear dropout. Adaptable to different brake disc sizes thanks to the utilization of differently dimensioned adapters.

Nordest Cycles Bardino 27.5+

Nordest Cycles Bardino 27.5+ M1

Nordest Cycles Bardino 27.5+ M1

For a while the bike designer behind the titanium bikes of Jerónimo Cycles in the Canary Islands has been teasing a new, affordable steel mountain bike project they’ve been developing. The details are in and it turns out that they’ve spun off a separate bike brand that will focus on producing performance steel bikes – Nordest Cycles. A more complete bike line-up is planned for introduction at the end of the summer, but for now they are introducing the first bike that will go through a crowdfunding campaign starting in a about a week to get it out to riders faster. The Nordest Bardino is a 4130 steel 27.5+ hardtail designed in Tenerife for enduro riding, built around a 160mm fork, and available in reasonably priced frame, frameset, and complete bike options to hit a trail near you…

After several months of testing the final prototypes over the winter in Spain & Portugal the new Bardino is ready to head into production.

Nordest_Bardino frame

The double butted 4130 chromoly frame gets the most recent crop of contemporary trail bike tech and features. That means low, long & slack geometry optimized for short 40mm stems, plus the ability to run true plus-sized 27.5+ tires or for wide twenty niner trail tires. That amounts to clearance up to 27.5×3″ or 29×2.5″ thanks to a plate style drive side chain-stay yoke design.

Nordest_Bardino steel blue frame

With a 65° head angle and built for 160mm 27.5″ forks, the bikes get a 44mm gusseted head-tube for tapered steerers.

The bottom bracket sticks with 73mm threaded, and gets ISCG05 tabs for whatever type of trouble you want to get into.

Bardino 73mm bb

Out back a replaceable set of dropouts provide Boost 148 spacing, but also potential flexibility in the future for other builds (single-speed maybe?) Routing is all external for easy setup, but does get a port in the seat tube for stealth dropper routing.

Unlike their sister company’s made-in-Europe ti bikes, these all come out of a factory in Taiwan. And with that comes affordability. The Bardino is available as a frame-only for just 550€, including shipping through the EU.

 Bardino M1

All the frames then make their way to Spain where they get built up for each rider. So throw in a bit more scratch and from 1540€ you can get a frame kit with a Fox trail fork and a Cane Creek headset. Frame kit customization will even let you piece together a dropper seat-post, a complete Thomson cockpit kit, or a Chris King headset as your budget allows.

Bardino_M2

Complete bikes will be available in two builds: the 2500€ Bardino M2 shown above with a Fox 36 Performance fork, an SLX 1×11 group, and Thomson covert dropper; or the 3300€ Bardino M1 shown below with an XT build upgraded to a Fox 36 Factory FIT4 fork.

The Bardino is available in three stock sizes – M, M/L & L – with the middle one claiming a frame weight of 2650g. All of the new Nordest frames will come with a 5 year warranty, and we should expect to see more bikes available as Nordest fills out the line sometime this September.

PLUS BIKE REVIEW /JensonUSA

This Orbea Loki isn’t the bike you bring home to mother. This is the one she tells you to stay away from because it will be a bad influence. This is the 27+ bike that will pull you away from you’re serious and “important” XC or endurance business and encourage you to part take in more mischievous deeds. Kicking out the bike tire, wheelies out of the corners, and grinning non-stop may become the new  style norm for you.

27+, is a big new standard. It takes the diameter of a 27.5 or 650b rim, and widens the rim bed to 40mm. Then is paired to an extra-wide tire. Here, Orbea chose the 3.0” model. Additionally it will fit a set of standard 29” wheels as well as accommodate the “FUN SIZE” wheelset.

Also boost axle 27+ spacing, front and rear is what allows this magic to happen as well as providing the with stable and solid handling. Internal cable routing for the drive train and dropper posts, along with integrated rear brake mounts on seat stay keeps everything clean and tidy.

Onto the Loki Triple butted aluminum frame, they spec’d it with a RockShox Recon Silver RL Boost fork with 120mm travel and a 15 x 110mm front axle. A solid Shimano SLX 1X11 drivetrain, which consists of SLX Shifters, SLX rear derailleur, FSA Comet Mega-exo 1x crankset and M365 hydraulic disc brakes, handles the job of getting rider generated power to the rear wheels. Sun Ringle Duroc TR wheels are wrapped in Kenda 27.5, 2.8 inch wide tires.

Rounding out the build is Orbea’s own stem, their Digit seat-post and a 760mm wide riser bar. Ignore your Mother’s warnings and do what feels right. Let the 27+ show you how to let your hair down and what being on a mountain bike is supposed to be all about…FUN!

First shown at Outerbike’s 2017 venue was a seductive-looking carbon frame with smooth lines, an understated but attractive paint scheme, and snappy-looking geometry from none other than Spot Bikes.

The Mayhem 27.5+ is a new model that Spot will be launching this week at Sea Otter. For Outerbike, they only had one prototype on display at and it wasn’t available to ride. Fortunately they realesed a few photos.

Spot Mayhem 29_textreme

The Mayhem is the little brother of the Rollik, offering a more trail-oriented 130mm of suspension travel front and rear vs. the 140/150 on the Rollik. The head tube angle measures 66.7 degrees. Check out Spot Brand’s website for full geo and their 4-Star /5-Star build spec information.

This model spotted features 27.5+ wheels (the Rollik currently offers 27.5″ wheels) with a set of aggressive treads, but according to the Spot website, “They also offer the Mayhem in a 27.5+ size for those who want more rubber on the dirt. Overall, both Mayhems offer some elegant engineering solutions that meet the needs of modern riders.” Currently both the 29er model and the 27.5+ are listed on Spot’s website. According to Spot, “the Mayhem uses the same frame for 29 × 2.35″ and 27.5 × 2.8″.”

The most unique part of Spot’s full suspension offerings is their Living Link leaf spring near the bottom bracket. Spot provides a lengthy explanation of the Living Link on their website, but here’s the gist of it:

The Living Link™ system re-imagines and reinvents full-suspension technology to provide riders with multiple benefits over conventional systems. We accomplish this by replacing the standard, maintenance-prone cartridge bearings with a highly-developed composite leaf spring. We pair it with a finely-tuned air shock, which works in conjunction with the leaf spring, to harness the advantages of both. The Living Link™ leaf spring is both laterally stiff and vertically dynamic, providing a progressive flex through its range of motion. The result is a leap forward in bike handling, durability, longevity and pure fun.

While some of the claims like durability and longevity can only be tested over the long term, having very positive reviews for Spot’s leaf spring on the Rollik, I’m pretty sure the Living Link will be soon put to some long-term testing. And the verdict will be out.

LOKI 27+ H20 BIKE REVIEW

This 2017 Orbea isn’t the bike you bring home to mother. This is the one she tells you to stay away from because it will be a bad influence. This is the Orbea that will pull you away from you’re serious and “important” XC or endure business and encourage you to part take in more mischievous deeds. Kicking out the bike tire, wheelies out of the corners, and grinning non-stop may become the new Loki style norm for you.

The Orbea Loki triple butted aluminum frame is capable of two jobs. It will fit a set of standard 29” wheels as well as accommodate the 27+ “FUN SIZE” wheelset. Boost axle spacing, front and rear is what allows this magic to happen as well as providing the Loki with stable and solid handling. Internal cable routing for the drive train and dropper posts, along with integrated rear brake mounts on seat stay keeps everything clean and tidy.

Onto the Loki Triple butted aluminum frame, Orbea has spec’d it with a RockShox Recon Silver RL Boost fork with 120mm travel and a 15 x 110mm front axle. A solid Shimano SLX/XT 1X11 drivetrain, which consists of SLX Shifters, XT rear derailleur, Shimano SLX M7000 crankset and M506 hydraulic disc brakes, handles the job of getting rider generated power to the rear wheels. Sun Ringle Duroc TR wheels are wrapped in 3 inch wide Maxxis Chronicle tires. Rounding out the build is a Race Face Ride stem, Orbea Digit seatpost and their 760mm wide bar. Ignore your Mother’s warnings and do what feels right. Let the Loki 27+ show you how to let your hair down and what being on a mountain bike is supposed to be all about…FUN!

2017 Rocky Mountain Suzi Q Carbon 90° 27.5 Fat Bike Testing Review

Rocky Mountain Suzi Q Carbon -90 2017 Fat Bike
Rocky Mountain Suzi Q 90 Carbon Fat Bike

Suzi Q Carbon FAT BIKE REVIEW

PRICE $4,299.00 – For Sale

Rocky Mountain’s new line of fast moving 2017 Suzi Q fat bikes aim to turn the dial up a few notches, and are reimagined as a lightweight carbon (or alloy) hardtail with a narrow Q-factor and short chain-stays that can still squeeze in wide tires. That makes it as agile on singletrack as it is capable on loose terrain. The Rocky Mountain engineers have basically dropped the 26″ fat tire standard and now working with a new 27.5 × 3.8″ wheel/tire combo that gives all the upsides of the smaller wheels with a lot of other benefits. Maybe snow is where 27.5+ is going next…

Suzi Q 90

At its heart the Rocky Mountain looks like a good balance between a normal Q-factor hardtail and a proper fat bike. While we’ve sometimes wondered about how much tire you could cram in a bike that still felt ‘normal’ to ride, Rocky Mountain seems to have had similar thoughts. Why not have a 27.5+ bike that would be as much fun to ride in the snow through the winter as it would be to rail hard-pack trails in the summer.

The 1x only frame with a 192mm Q-factor cranks in a PressFit 107 bottom bracket (effectively the same spacing as a normal 83mm BB) ends up 20mm narrower than most fat bikes for both improved pedaling feel & performance. They pair with a 177mm hub for a Suzi Q mid-width rear end. That still ends up at least 20-24mm wider at the pedals than most MTB models to fit the chain around the wide tire, but cutting that width difference in half is a big improvement for pedaling comfort.

Rocky Mountain Suzi Q Geometry

Geometry-wise Suzi Q gets a stable trail feel with a 68° headtube and long reach, but keeps it nimble with the Mountain’s highly revised short-for-fat 434mm chainstays. RM says they were worried with the “autosteering” feel that many fat bikes get with that big wheel out front, but managed to settle on a fork offset and front end feel that is much more predictable and fun to ride than other similar bikes. Besides a quick handling and a light carbon frame, the light 27.5×3.8″ tire combo developed with Maxxis is actually a pretty big deal. Head to head with the common 26×4″ used for fat racing and all around riding, the new 27.5+ setup offers a bigger outside diameter for better rollover, while still offering plenty of volume for ultra-low pressures on the 65mm wide Sun Ringlé rims. Sure if you are looking for the fattest 5″ wide tire to sit on top of packed snow this isn’t your bike, but the 27.5×3.8″ setup is lighter and should actually roll up and over soft snow or any other trail obstacles even better.

Suzi Q 70

Suzi Q comes in both full carbon frame (RSL) and aluminum frame variants, in four complete builds, all now available, each one in four sizes from S-XL. Set up rigid but suspension corrected for a 100mm Bluto, the -90°, -70° & -50° get full carbon monocoque forks, while the -30° gets an all-alloy one and a lower price. All get light bolt-on axles that are said to save 100g per bike compared to a standard Maxle. The bikes also include integrated chainstay & downtube protectors, internal routing with a Di2 friendly stealth battery port, stealth dropper routing, and a whole bunch of braze-on points for: 2 bottle cages on the fork, 2 more in the front triangle, main triangle riv-nuts for bolt-on frame bags, and more.

MTB Suzi Q 30_50_70_90
The top all carbon Suzi Q 90° retails for $4300 with an XTR drivetrain, XT 11-46 cassette on a DT hub, Race Face 28T Turbine crank, and tubeless ready Sun Ringlé Düroc 65 rims & 3.8″ tubeless Maxxis Minion FBF tires. Without pedals and setup tubeless, it is said to weigh just 25.3lb.

For a grand less the -70° shares the same Rocky Mountain carbon frame, even the same gearing & wheel/tire combo, just with XT shifting and a bit more affordable cockpit bits to sell for $3300.

Going with a hydroformed 6061 aluminum frame, the -50° shares the carbon fork and the top wheel/tire/cassette setup but gets a mix of SLX & XT to get the price down to $2600.

At the lowest point of entry the Suzi Q -30° retails for $1900 with the alloy frame, alloy fork, and a pared back build, featuring SRAM NX, Level brakes and a more narrow 11-42t cassette on wheel using the same rims & tires but cheaper hubs.

Santa Cruz Chameleon D 29 Hardtail MTB – 2017 Review

Santa Cruz Chameleon D 29 hardtail 2017

CHAMELEON 29 D BIKE

PRICE $1,539.00 – 5% off

Santa Cruz Chameleon D 29 hardtail 2017

Santa Cruz is here to blur the line between trail-ripping hardtail and fast-rolling XC whip, as the newest 2017 Santa Cruz can conquer everything from near-impassable boulders on the trail to blistering-fast XC loops. In this 2-niner form the Santa Cruz Chameleon will allow for you to master both disciplines with the rolling momentum of bigger wheels. Nifty extras, such as BOOST front and rear axles and internal dropper routing make it a solid platform for upgrading in the future without worries of obsolescence.

The Chameleon is here to match the evolving standards of modern trail bikes, the newest ride sports a longer front end, low-slung bottom bracket of 12.4 inches, snappy-short 16.3-inch chainstays, and a relaxed head tube angle of 67.3 degrees. These geometry figures amount to an extremely confident, well-balanced bike that’s confident ripping steep descents and lifting the front over trail obstacles, yet one that’s always eager to ride back uphill.

Although the Chameleon has always been renowned for its adaptability to a wide variety of terrain, it’s really outdone itself with the newest version boasting the ability to effortlessly swap between 27.5+ and 29er wheels, courtesy of its interchangeable dropouts. These interchangeable dropouts allow you to swap out the gears for singlespeed use, should you desire a no-nonsense drivetrain that excels in topographically-challenged areas or simply enjoy pushing your bike without pesky gears. 15-millimeters of fore and aft adjustment manages chain tension and chainstay length.
This particular build benefits immensely from the speed-carrying momentum afforded by its bigger wheels. This translates to a faster riding experience when you’re racing on the weekends in the local state forest, also providing a greater angle of attack for steam-rolling trail impediments, such as imposing rocks and gnarled roots. The provided 2.3/2.25-inch tubeless tires provide an optimal balance of rolling efficiency and grip. Should you desire to increase tire volume, the Chameleon readily accepts 2.5-inch rubber in this 2-niner form for greater traction and bump compliancy.

If your interesed in this fabulous Chameleon bike review, it’s available with purchase info at Backcountry.com. Enjoy all the fun this upcoming year.

Pells Razzer Elite 7 Plus

2017 Pells Razzer Elite 7 Plus

Razzer ELITE 7 Plus

The Razzer comes to you via the new category of 27.5+ bikes that provide better traction, riding qualities and higher comfort, as the 2017 Pells Razzer bike is now not only great choice for less experienced riders as it supports their riding mistakes, but for experienced riders due to additional support in extremely hard terrain as well. Pells didn’t go with 2.6″ tires on standard rims, but instead employed 2.8-2.95″ tires on special “+” rims that can be also mounted with 3.2″ tire.

The 27.5+ models now employ all the current technology with the Razzer series. They started a very ambitious project to make an aluminum bike with comfort of carbon bike. As designers used ideas from the development of their Medium Tail. While the unique new rear triangle is made from P6 and 7005 material and provides the bike with exclusive riding characteristic and a fabulous look. Very flat seatstays with the width of only 12 mm in combination with a flat chain stay give the frame top class comfort with the same level of stiffness. This combination allows for them to bend in a vertical way and hold the maximal horizontal stiffness. Frames also now have post mount brakes on the chainstay inside the rear triangle.

Smooth welding in the part of head tube gives the P6 ultralite frames “carbon look”. Frames have triple butted tubes and pyramid head tube with 1.5″ bearing are made for maximal stiffness and accuracy.

Plus frame catches an eye with well done construction. Top tube is made with Pells hydroforming and with its Bi-axial technology allows perfect connection to BB and head tube. This helps to transform rider´s power into pedaling. Pells Racing Elite XC geometry is made for 100mm fork travel. Due to bent seat tube chain stays and whole rear triangle can be shorter. Therefore, the whole bike has better riding attributes, stability and traction.

Razzer comes with a new elegant top tube, its shape and profile supports rider´s comfort. The top tube is well attached to seat stays and its profile flattens towards seat tube and runs around it. This solution is used due to design originality of the frame but also for bike´s better performance.

“Closing” of seat tube close to wider top tube and bigger distance of chain stays supports stiffness of the frame. Vertical flattening of top tube in this area enables better absorption of vibrations. The overall look of the frame is marked by design coming over parts of this frame.

XAM 29 PLUS XT

2017 Pells XAM 29 Plus XT

XAM is a completely new concept of bike that features “three in one” to provide you options of 29+ / 27.5 / 27.5+ wheels, thanks to those options the 2017 Pells XAM can be used throughout the entire year on many different surfaces. The frame is made of Pells High Modulus Carbon Fibre with high stiffness and flexibility.

Dual Boost Position – advantages in the three wheel sizes in one bike are possible with this technology. Post mount can be moved as well. Thanks to this systém, it is possible to use the three wheel sizes and maintain required riding characteristics. Wheels 29 are mounted with 3″ tires – better traction, stability and ride in difficult terrain is gained with reasonable weight.

Boost – wider rear axle 12×148 mm increases stiffness of the XAM rear triangle which also supports the strength of the spokes making the wheels stronger.

2017 pells xam boost148

Tapered head tube with lower headset socket of 1.5“ combines low weight of classical headset (upper socket) with stiffness of 1.5“ construction. Thanks to this construction the head tube is stiffer, the XAM has better stability in high speed situations, steering is more accurate and the bike is thus easier to control.

2017-pells-xam-cockpit

BB92 – extended crank link in the Pells frame comes with an integrated bearing (Press Fit). Thanks to this construction Pells  design crew were able produce the crank section wider and thus stiffer as well. The bearing is better protected and its mounting is easier.

2017 Juliana Joplin CC 27.5+ X01 Enve

2017 Juliana Joplin Carbon CC 27.5+ X01 enve

Part Joplin endurance racer, part rowdy trail bike…

price: $8,550.00 save 0%

The 2017 Juliana Joplin CC 27.5+ X01 Enve2 is ridiculously fun. The original Joplin model redefined what people thought a 29er could be. This latest version breaks the mold all over again.

Yes, the Joplin makes for one fine cross-country/endurance machine. With its light-yet-stiff carbon frame, efficient VPP® rear suspension, and it’s wheel option, this bike can be an absolute race weapon—but the Joplin is more than that.

The Joplin has always been, to reduce this thing to a single word, called fun. As in the uncontrollable-giggling-spontaneous-high-fiving kind of fun. Juliana cranked the knob on that particular trait to 11 this year with a ground-up redesign that increases the bike’s composure on descents, adds a bit more small-bump suppleness to the mix and improves its handling in tight turns.

Juliana Joplin Carbon CC 27.5+ X01 2017

The new Joplin also gives you the option of running different diameter wheels. If you’re looking for quick acceleration and a nimble feel, go 29er. If you’re wanting extra traction and a more forgiving ride over roots and babyhead rocks, go 27.5+. It’s your choice.

Is the Joplin a cross-country racer? Sure. A trail bike? Absolutely. Is it fun? Oh, hell yes.

So for this CC carbon Juliana model in particular, the 27.5+ frame is every bit as stiff and strong as their Carbon-level frames, but weighs about 280 grams less, due to the use of some lighter, stronger, and more expensive carbon fiber. Using this top-level Carbon material in key places allowed them to use less material overall, which is what shaves off more than half a pound from the frame.

Description

The 2017 Fuji Bighorn is a modern hardtail with contemporary geometry and spec that is up to the challenge of just about any trail. The 27.5+ tires on the Bighorn provide gobs of traction and stability for increased confidence on the trail and act as micro suspension so you don’t get beat up hammering over roots and rocks.

The Bighorn is truly ideal because now you don’t have to end your ride early due to lack of comfort, as comfort is of vital importance. The new Bighorn was designed to ease your stress on the trail, instead of adding to it.

Also the Bighorn’s lightweight frame and suspension fork are easy to maneuver while the plush 120mm travel helps to take the sting out of just about anything out there. Additionally, the Bighorn employs a 10-speed Shimano 2×10 drivetrain with Rapid Fire shifters. Simple and effective is where it’s at.

Wheels and tires don’t just go round and round, they deliver important stability and forgiveness against choppy terrain. The Bighorn’s Sun Ringle Mulefut 50SL disc rims and Schwalbe Nobbi Nic 3.0″ tires smooth out the slope or trail beneath you and make cornering safer. Finally, a set of soft rubber Kraton grips and a comfort oriented Oval Concepts saddle provide plenty of cushion to two of three major points that make contact with your super cool ride.

2017 Santa Cruz Hightower CC 27.5+ XX1 Eagle

2017 Santa Cruz Hightower CC 27.5+ XX1 Eagle

Overview Hightower 27.5+ XX1

Here we have the 2017 Santa Cruz Hightower CC XX1 in all it’s glory! Hightower has the versatility to deal with whatever appears on the horizon.  Running the new monster-truck 27.5+ Santa Cruz standard, the bike seamlessly adapts to the trails and style you ride, no matter where you are in the world. When conditions get loose and the traction just ain’t there, you’ll want to reach for bigger tires.

27 plus elevates Hightower to a whole different level, enabling you to rise above the pow, rail the soft spots and carry momentum where standard tires bog down. Although no matter what wheel size you choose, geometry remains optimized thanks to a neat little “High/Low” setting on the upper link that flips to adjust bottom bracket height*.  Hightower’s 67° head angle, longer reach and trim chain stays combine to create an altogether different class of dreadnought in any configuration.  Meanwhile, 150mm of seat dropper, a water bottle mount, and internal routing reflect an armada of killer details.

135mm of VPP® travel is reinforced by a 148 rear axle spacing and the kind of Nomad-style linkage arrangement and swingarm design we reserve for the heaviest hitters in our model line up.  The resulting package leaves the bike standing head and shoulders above anything else out there.

This CC-level carbon frame is every bit as stiff and strong as the Santa Cruz C-level frame, but weighs about 230 grams less, due to the use of some lighter, stronger, and more expensive carbon fiber. Using this material in key Hightower places allowed them to use less material overall, which is what shaves off half a pound from the frame.

2017 Niner Jet 9 RDO 27.5+ 3-Star XT Review

2017 Niner Jet 9 RDO 27.5+ 3-star XT Review

2017 Niner Trail Induced…

This time Niner’s Jet 9 27.5+ comes highly modified.. yes extremely modified might describe it better.  They went all out to launch two completely new bikes. If you’ve been paying attention to current MTB trends, you probably know how this is going to go. Yes, the brand exclusive to 29ers have two bikes capable of running wheels that are not 29″.

2017 Niner Jet 9 RDO 27.5+ Eagle XX1 Enve

The new RIP and JET 9 are the continuation of their “Big (R)evolution.” That encompasses both the evolution of their bikes and of the brand itself. This change started out with the new RKT nine and continued with the AIR nine as both bikes received new tech and modern geometry updates with shorter chainstays, longer reach, and a better ride overall. When it came time to redesign the bread and butter for their trail category, they wanted to offer consumers the best bike possible. So the company has expanded into gravel and cross with 700c wheels, Plus on the 29+ side, and now… 27.5+.

2017 Niner Jet 9 RDO 27.5+

Using all of the engineering and development knowledge gained over the years building bikes around the big wheels, Niner is diving head long into the 27.5+ category with a mid-travel JET 9 and long-travel RIP. The results are still classic, but offer a completely new way for the same brand to attack the trail.

2017 Niner Jet 9 RDO 120mm travel frame

The Jet 9 fits as most manufacturers seem to agree that Plus bikes have a place,  but haven’t agreed on how to go about building them. Initially, it seemed that the bikes were built with enough clearance to run the bigger tires but without much thought towards geometry. Then tire sizes seemed to stabilize around 27.5 x 2.8″ tires on 40mm rims. The Jet 9 accomplishes the variation with slightly longer travel.

2017 Niner Jet 9 RDO 27.5+ grey frame

So not only the new JET 9 but the  Rip will also be sold in stock form with both options of 29″ and 27.5+ versions – one of each for every build level, from GX1, SLX, XT, X01 Eagle, and XX1 Eagle for the top level. Depending on the rider and their needs for a Jet 9 style trail bike, they feel that this ability to change wheel size is a feature customers are looking for as they search for every advantage they can get for their ride.

New suspension travel numbers are 120mm for the rear, and 130mm for the front via Fox’s 34 Float Factory FIT4 Kashima fork. Other details for 3-star XT complete bike here

2017 diamondback rely women's trail review

Rely 27.5+ Women’s Trail Bike

$1190 sale/save 14%

The 2017 Diamondback Women’s Trail bike is both slack and pretty sick, and perfect for the rider that’s looking to push further and go faster. This Diamonback Rely setup features a Shimano 10-speed drivetrain, 120mm of travel of front suspension, and Diamondback’s Weapons Grade aluminum frame make short work of long rides and large obstacles.

The Rely Trail is all about comfort and control. All-mountain riding requires are more slack body position, so the Rely allows for your center of gravity to stay lower, while bringing the front end of the Rely bike closer to your body. That means your body stays more upright and experiences less stress on your hands, back, and neck. The aluminum Rely frame is meant to take a beating and features double-butted and formed tubes. 148 x 12 dropouts stiffen the rear of the frame when under load.

The Rely is perfect for dashing down the slopes, or slogging up a hill, you don’t need a lot of gears, but you do need the right ones. The Rely rightly gets a 1×10 drivetrain with a 30-tooth crank and a 11/40 cassette. That’s plenty of variety for even the steepest of hills. A Deore 10-speed trigger shifter and Tektro Auriga hydraulic disc brakes provide the Rely  all of the stop and go you need.

  • Rely Women’s geometry aluminum frame with a taper head tube and 148×12 rear dropouts for stiffness and control
  • Shimano/SRAM custom 1×10 drivetrain and Tektro Auriga hydraulic disc brakes
  • Diamondback Blanchard 38 tubeless compatible wheels and Big Daddy 27.5+ x 3.5″ wide tires
  • Devine designs women’s specific saddle

2017 Yeti SB5, SB5 Beti, w/ SB5+ w/ new TURQ or Carbon frame options

2017 Yeti SB5+TURQ XX1 Eagle_Black

If a company doesn’t have a plus option yet, chances are pretty high that we’ll see it this week. Case in point – 2017 Yeti SB5+, a redesigned version of the SB5 built to specifically accommodate 27+ wheels and tires. The plus crowd isn’t the only group to benefit from the new SB5 though as both men’s and women’s SB5 and SB5 Beti have been redesigned for the coming season.

The TURQ and well, Yeti Carbon will be the new models, they will have two new build levels for their frames. Yeti TURQ will fill in as the high end option, but both will be made of carbon fiber…

2017 Yeti Cycles SB5+ Carbon XT_Black

Starting with the new frames, each Yeti model will now be available in two levels. TURQ, named after their signature turquoise color, will be reserved for the best of the best. These frames use a bigger percentage of high modulus carbon fiber to achieve frame weights of 250-400g less than their Carbon siblings. The name Carbon might be a bit confusing since both bikes are carbon, but the lower tier Carbon series uses less high modulus fiber but still passes all the same performance and testing requirements for the same ride, just a bit heavier.

SB5+geo

Jumping into the plus category, the new SB5+ still uses the Switch Infinity translating pivot frame design, but adds a new rear swingarm with a raised chain stay to offer chain and tire clearance. The frames are designed to work around 27 x 2.8″ tires and a 67.1 degree head tube angle with 74.1 degree seat tube angle.

2017 Yeti SB5+ builds

The Boost spacing frame with internal routing will be available in five builds, three TURQ and two Carbon, both with SRAM Eagle options and pricing ranging from $4,699 to $10,499.

2017 Yeti Cycles SB5 Carbon X01 Eagle_Black

On the non plus side, they are rolling out a new SB5 platform for both men and women. New for both frames is a decreased standover height, boost spacing, internal routing, and Metric suspension with their Switch Infinity linkage. Mated with 150mm travel suspension forks and 27.5″ wheels, the SB5 and SB5 Beti should remain one of their more popular models. The SB5 Beti gains women’s touch points as well as lighter suspension tunes to work with smaller riders.

2017 Pivot Mach 429 SL Plus w/ Boost Axle

2017 Mach 429 SL -XTR Di2 1X - Black/Blue

Mach 429 SL

2017 Pivot Mach 429 SL bikes are here, while they were already amazing to ride. So good in fact, that the newest version has changed very little. Even though there isn’t a lot new, the changes keep the Mach current, and end up giving the bike another trick up its sleeves in terms of tires…

2017 Mach 429 SL -XTR 1X - Black/Red

Keeping in line with Pivot’s carbon bikes, the Mach uses their Hollow Core Internal Molding technology to create a light frame without excess resin, wrinkles, and voids in the carbon. Weights appear to be very close to the previous Mach version with frames starting at 5.3lbs (2.4Kg) and completes capable sub 23lb (10.4kg).

Mach429SL_Geometry

Available in Pivot S-XL plus frames, they recommend the height breakdown below:

  • Small: 5’4″ – 5’10”
  • Medium: 5’9″ – 6’1”
  • Large: 6’1″ – 6’4”
  • X-Large: 6’3″ and taller

The biggest Mach change to the 100mm travel ride is the addition of Boost 148 x 12 rear spacing. The move allows for stiffer rear triangle as well as stiffer wheels to be used and offers additional tire clearance. That clearance can be used for a 429 plus tire configuration with room for both a 2.35″ and 27.5 x 2.8″ tires.

Pivot-item-17

Built to include their Cable Port System, the Mach is 1x and 2x compatible along with mechanical or Di2 drivetrain compatible with the battery stashed in the downtube of the frame. Along with the PF92 bottom bracket and ISCG05 tabs, the Mach uses post mount 160 disc brake tabs which will fit up to a 180mm rotor, internal dropper routing for a 30.9mm post, and provisions for two water bottle cages.

17 Pivot Mach 429 frame

The 429 will be sold in multiple different configurations with 120mm travel forks and pricing starting at $4,199 and will be available immediately.

Features:

  • Frame weight from 5.3lbs (2.4Kg) and sub 23lb (10.4kg) complete.

2017 Niner RIP 9 Aluminum 2 Star SLX w/ 27.5+ options

2017 Niner RIP 9 Aluminum 2 Star SLX

Niner Rip 9 Aluminum 2 Star SLX 27.5+ Bike – 2017

Eyeing the new RIP 9 RDO but having trouble stomaching the price? Not to worry, Niner has you covered. Like most brands, their top of the line bikes are created from the wonderful material known as carbon fiber. Carbon has the potential to make really light and strong frames, but it also has a tendency to increase the price.

Now the newest Niner gets a lower priced makeover in the form of we-made-the-same-thing-in-aluminum. That means you get most of the Niner RDO performance including the dual wheel size capability, without the price…

RIP 9 linkage

The RIP 9 aluminum employs their CVA suspension system to pack in 150mm of rear travel, similar to the carbon version. To keep the aluminum frame simple as well as durable, you’ll find a threaded bottom bracket, external cable routing, ISCG 05 tabs, and a Zerostack tapered headtube.

Niner RIP 9 Alloy

Some of the biggest news is the addition of + wheel compatibility thanks to Boost rear spacing and bigger tire clearance, and that continues here as well.

To make up for the difference in tire size, the twentynine bikes come with a 160mm travel suspension fork while the + models bump up to 170mm. That keeps the numbers dialed into their [R]evolution geometry which stretches out the cockpit and allows the use of shorter stems and wider bars.

RIP 9 TECH SPECS

  • Niner’s patented CVA suspension design delivers 150mm of plush, efficient rear travel
  • Niner revised geometry is optimized for modern trail riding, providing confident descending, efficient climbing and a bike that is just all around fun
  • 73mm BSA threaded bb with ISCG 05 tabs
  • 30.9 seat post, 400mm recommended
  • Internal and external dropper post compatible
  • 34.9 Seat collar
  • 1.125” X 1.5” tapered zero stack headset included, 44mm upper, 56mm lower, Cane Creek
  • Niner Boost 148 x 12mm rear spacing
  • All Niner sizes have 1 bottle mount inside front triangle
  • SRAM/Shimano 1x Boost max chain ring clearance: 36t, 168mm Q factor

2017 Niner RIP 9 SLX

The SLX aluminum models will be offered in different builds – one with 29″ wheels for $3,500, and one with Rip 9 27.5+ wheels and tires for $3,80o. Both bikes include a 1×11 SLX drivetrain with a RaceFace Aeffect parts kit and a KS Dropzone dropper, while the price difference comes from the wheels with the plus version getting an upgraded Stan’s Neo/Baron wheelset. Both Niner models start shipping to dealers here.

Wolf Tooth Components forms Otso Cycles, and releases Voytek Plus/fat carbon w/ Warakin gravel bikes

Wolf Tooth Components forms Otso Cycles, and releases Voytek fat carbon w Warakin gravel bikes

All photos c. Otso Cycles

Wolf Tooth Cycles has been quietly working on a new product range, but this time it’s not a new chainring, chainguide, or cassette adapter. Their newest project involves a completely new brand. Otso Cycles is the culmination of that work, and by the looks of things it’s time well spent.

Named after the spirit of the bear in Finnish mythology, Otso seems to fit well along side Wolf Tooth Components for companies named after revered and respected creatures. Their first two bikes share similar naming inspiration with the Warakin gravel bike named for a mythical wolf/hyena creature and the Voytek fat bike taking its namesake from a war fighting, soldier wrestling, beer drinking, cigarette smoking bear (true story). Aside from the clever names though, Otso Cycles are noteworthy for more than just being new bikes from a well known component manufacturer.

Otso wasn’t created just to release another me-too bike into an already crowded marketplace. The bikes both have specific traits that make them stand out (game changing, even), and should make them quite desirable.

Otso Voytek tuning chip detail

DROPOUT BOM AND INSTRUCTIONS -

Knowing what we do about the Voytek, it’s hard to know where to begin without just blurting out a bunch of excitement over the bike. Though, we should probably start at the dropouts. Both bikes feature Otso’s Tuning Chip dropouts which are an elegant solution to the bikes’ versatility. Even though the system effectively offer the benefits of a sliding dropout, the dropout chips themselves are stationary which completely eliminates slipping and should cut down on any creaks. Otso also promises a unique solution to run single speeds in the dropouts as well, likely to be released by Interbike.

Otso Voytek Fat-Bike

Built around a 142 x 12mm thru axle for the Warakin and 177 x 12mm thru axle for the Voytek (more on this later, it’s probably not what you think), the dropouts have 2 different tuning chips. One chip is used for the fore and aft positions by flipping it around to gain the adjustment, with a second chip available for the middle position. This corresponds to the 20mm total adjustment for the chainstay length with 10mm increments. It also serves to steepen or slacken the head tube angle by +/-0.2º due to the angle of the dropout slot.

Not only does the Tuning chip alter the geometry, but it also allows for different tire clearances. The Warakin will clear 40mm tires at the 420mm setting, but grows to 50mm for the 430/440mm settings. The Voytek is similar in that it will clear 4.0″ tires on the 430mm setting, or 4.6″ tires at 440/450mm.

Clearing 4.6″ tires with a 177 x 12 rear hub and short chainstays is only part of the story, though. The crew at Wolf Tooth Components loves riding and racing fat bikes, but one thing has always bugged them – the Q Factor. After spending all winter pedaling around a fat bike, switching to your normal mountain bike in the spring can be be an eye opener as your legs are forced to adapt to a completely different Q factor. Most of us put up with it, but lately fat bike manufacturers have been finding ways to rein in the width of the cranks, but no one has taken it quite as far as Otso.

Otso Votyek Grey Frame with carbon fork

Rather than using a 100mm threaded (PF 121) fat bike bottom bracket and flipping the chainring, the Voytek runs a PF 107 shell which is equivalent to an 83mm threaded shell. When used with a RaceFace Cinch crank and their 83mm/PF 107 XC spindle (RF149), the Voytek’s Q factor is dramatically reduced from your typical fat bike, yet it still clears up to 4.6″ tires with a 177mm rear hub. Officially, the Q factor on the Next SL 107 cranks is 183mm while the RaceFace Aeffect cranks for the bike are a bit wider at 189mm. Compare that to the 177mm Q factor for a standard Boost crank with a trail spindle, and you can see how much closer it is than the 203/205mm Q factor for RaceFace Next/Aeffect fat bike cranks.

In other words, Otso worked some serious geometry Kung fu to create one of the most pedalable fat bikes ever.

Otso Voytek rigid

That Q factor isn’t just for fat bikes though. Many people are building up plus size wheelsets for “summer wheels” on their fat bikes, but with the same massive Q factor and geometry concessions. The Voytek’s tricks make it into a plus bike that you actually want to pedal during the summer, and one of the fastest fat bike builds around.

Otso Voytek_Black_Sus

Combined with different forks, you can truly build two bikes in one, with geometry to match. Fat bikes will be built around a 100mm suspension corrected rigid fork or 100mm travel suspension forks. For plus builds, Otso recommends bumping up to a 120mm travel suspension fork with 27 x 2.8″ tires for the ideal geometry. The longer fork slacks out the head tube by 0.5º and will slightly raise the BB to compensate for the smaller tires. Otso will even sell the Voytek in a 29+ configuration which the frame will accommodate, though the bigger tires will raise the BB slightly and you will mostly likely have to use the middle or rear dropout position.

Otso_Voytek_Black_Frame_Side

Designed with a full carbon frame and fork, the Voytek uses guided internal routing for the rear derailleur and stealth dropper post and external routing for the brakes. The frame uses an internal IS41/IS52 tapered headset, is 1x only, and uses a 30.9mm seat post. Offered in two colors and in frankset (frameset + crankset) or complete fat or plus builds, pricing will start at $2299 for the frankset (frame, carbon fork, headset, crankset, bottom bracket, 32t WTC CAMO ring, and seat post clamp) and $3899 for complete rigid builds and $4199 for complete suspension builds. Each build is also eligible for a number of upgrades or add ons so you can bling it out or order two wheelsets to be ready to go with either size.

Just like the bike there are a lot of options when it comes to ordering a Voytek. There’s even a shipping option – free shipping is available if you want it shipped to you completely unassembled, as in bare frame, parts in the box. If you’d prefer it built, adjusted by a professional, and then fit into a box mostly ready to go, it’s a $120 charge. Available for preorder, bikes will be shipping in October.

Frame Details:

  • Bottom bracket standard -83 mm (press fit 107)
  • Max chainring size -34T round or 32T elliptical
  • Front/Rear hub standard -150 x 15 mm thru axle / 177×12 mm thru axle
  • Seat post diameter -30.9 mm, accomodates internally routed dropper post
  • Headset -IS41 / IS52
  • Fork axle-to-crown -485 mm (suspension corrected for 100-120 mm travel forks)
  • Fork offset-51 mm
  • Tire clearance (frame)-4.0″ @ 430 chainstay, 4.6″ @ 440/450 chainstay (actual frame clearance of 117 mm)
  • Tire clearance (Otso fork) -up to 4.8″ on 100 mm rim
  • Bare frame weight (size M) -1350 g
  • Fork weight-650 g
  • 120mm fork note: Using a 120 mm suspension fork will slacken the head tube angle approx. 0.5°

Otso_Warakin_105 complete

If fat/plus bikes aren’t your thing, you may want to check out the Warakin. Stainless steel bikes aren’t anything new, but stainless bikes in this price range are. According to Otso, they were able to enter uncharted territory for stainless steel frames thanks to a new forming method that gives the custom butted austenitic stainless steel its strength through the cold working process. This results in a bike with the ride qualities of steel, the snappy feel and corrosion resistance of titanium, and a price that is easier on the wallet.

Warakin Detail

Available in 6 sizes, the Warakin is Otso’s all road monster. Thanks to the versatility of the Tuning Chip, geometry can be tailored to the intended riding – shorter, higher, steeper for CX, or longer, lower, slacker for loaded touring or gravel grinding. The disc brake frame features full length external housing for shift and brake, three bottle braze ons, rack and fender mounts, a 68mm threaded bottom bracket, 142×12 and 100x15mm thru axle dropouts, a carbon fork with a tapered steerer to match the upper ZS44/28.6/lower EC44/40.0 headset, and a 27.2mm seat post. The 490g fork is designed with a 400mm axle to crown measurement and a 47mm offset and will fit up to 50mm tires. Otso is not hiding the fact that both the Voytek and the Warakin are made in Taiwan, though they point out that each one is built at one of the premiere facilities for each frame material that produce other high end carbon or steel bikes. Complete bikes are assembled in their shared headquarters with WTC in Minneapolis, MN.

Like the Voytek, the Warakin will be sold as a frameset or as a complete. The frameset option isn’t on the website yet, but Otso reported it will be $1,799 for the stainless frame, carbon fork, FSA/WTC headset, and seatpost clamp. Complete builds will be offered in a Shimano 105 mechanical disc brake build at $3,199 or an Ultegra hydraulic disc brake build at $4,399. Of note in the complete spec lists are a few Lithic components not heard of before now. So we’re guessing Lithic is possibly an extension of WTC or Otso, and that we’ll find out more in the future. Complete bikes are said to come in around 22 lbs (9.97kg) depending on the size and build kit.

Available for pre-order now, the Warakins will begin shipping in December and include the same shipping options as the Voytek – free, or $120 depending on whether you want your bike assembled or not.

The 2017 Ghost Hamr 6 27.5+ now has bigger wheels this year, because larger wheels are all the rage! A few years ago the Twentyniner revolutionized the mountain bike market and have since become an integral part – because the benefits of the model are obvious. Although Ghost opted more the massive wheels as they might take a little longer to get going. But they roll only once, then there is no stopping with incomparable smoothness and low rolling resistance you glide on singletrack with both rocks and roots that are simply ignored. Thanks to the longer contact patch on the ground the giant wheels offer better traction and behave less nervous than the smaller wheel sizes also in blocked terrain.

Bike frame made of aluminum

The Hamr aluminum frame is light, rigid and less expensive than what carbon would be. Modern aluminum frames are actually close to carbon visually, and they are hard to distinguish by the a new manufacturing process. Thanks to hydroforming technology, the production of a complex aluminum frame is possible, where considerably thinner walls and thus significant weight saving is attained.

2017 Specialized Enduro w/ 4 different tire sizes, new Ohlins 29/Plus fork

17 ENDURO FSR CARBON 650B

Official prices /pics for the 2017 Specialized MTB range.

In what might have been one of this year’s worst kept secrets, Specialized has been working on a new trail sled for your 2017 model year fast upon us. At this point, that isn’t to be taken lightly. Specialized is going on more than a decade of trail dominance and the bike has gained quite a few fans along the way.

Quite a bit has changed since the early days of the Enduro. There are multiple wheel sizes, different axle standards, and across the board bikes are being pushed to new limits. As a result, for 2017 there’s still two Specialized models, but now there’s  four different tire options…

ENDURO FSR CARBON 6FATTIE_NRDCRED-HYP-BLK

If you guessed the Enduro would have a plus option, you’re right. Split into two different frames, the new Specialized will be offered in 29″/27+ and 650b. Even though the 650b frame won’t fit the current crop of Plus tires, it will fit the new 27.5 x 2.6″ tires on offer from Specialized. In an interesting move, the 29/27+ bike will only be sold complete as a 29″ build, but the 650b bike will be sold with both 27.5 x 2.3″ and 27.5 x 2.6″ tire options, both with 30mm inner width rims. Given the more aggressive nature, it seems that Specialized feels the 2.6″ rubber is a better fit than 2.8″. However, Specialized claims if you want a true Plus build, you can swap a pair of Plus wheels and tires right into the 29″ frame which will fit up to 27.5 x 3.0″ tires and 29 x 2.5″.

Other than the Specialized tire sizes, the other differences between the two frames include geometry and suspension travel with the 29/6Fattie seeing 165mm rear/160mm front, and the 27.5″ bumping it up to 170mm of travel front and rear. The geometry on both frames has been designed for 2017 to offer slack head tube angles, short chainstays, and low bottom brackets, which all vary slightly depending on the wheel and tire selection.

Rumors were floating around that Specialized had abandoned their X-wing frame design, but instead they have updated it to work with the increased travel. S-Works and Pro models will use full Fact 11 carbon frames while the Elite Carbon uses a Fact 9 carbon front triangle with M5 aluminum rear, and the Comp moves to full M5 Alloy which loses the Specialized SWAT Box storage. The carbon frames all get the added storage capabilities of the Specialized SWAT Box system which allows you to stash gear, tools, food, or whatever else can fit in your downtube. The door doubles as a Specialized water bottle cage and the system helps keep the weight of your flat kit nice and low.

The Enduro still relies on FSR suspension, but for 2017 it has been given a number of upgrades for increased durability. All of the bearings are now the same size and are double filled. All cable routing is internal, and the rear cable routing has been tweaked so it now runs over the BB rather than looping under it. As you would expect, to fit the new tire sizes, all frames are Boost 148 x 12 rear and Boost 110 front. And yes, that is a 73mm threaded bottom bracket.

While all of the frames feature RX Tuned rear shocks with Autosag, the Specialized S-Works and Specialized Pro models get the Ohlins rear treatment with the STX22 RX All Mountain Tuned Autosag shock. The S-Works 29/6Fattie takes it a step further with the new Ohlins RXF 36 fork which features a twin tube damper, 3 chamber air spring, and Boost 110 x 15 spacing. The fork is listed as 29/27+ compatible so we assume it will fit 27 x 3.0″ tires like the frame.

Regardless of the Specialized model, if you buy a new version you’ll be getting 1x gearing, 780mm handlebars, a Specialized Command Post IRcc, SRAM Guide brakes, 30mm internal rims, and GRID casing tires. Just don’t try to mount a front derailleur, because it’s 1x only.

In addition to more burly plus tires now in the form of the Specialized Butcher and Slaughter in 27.5 x 2.8″, the Specialized tires will also be offered in 27.5 x 2.6″. Is this the Goldilocks tire for those on the fence with Plus?

17 END FSR CARBON 29 6FATTIE FRM BLK17 END FSR CARBON 29 6FATTIE FRM_NRDCRED BLK77717-05_END SP FSR CARBON LTD 29 6FATTIE FRM JAW

Specialized Frames will be offered in both the 29/6Fattie option and the 650b. The black and orange/yellow frames will be the stock colors, while the wild JAW color on the end will be offered as a Specialized limited edition. All three feature the Ohlins STX rear shock, chain guides, and the limited edition frame adds a Command Post IRcc. Pricing for the Specialized S-works frame will run $3,500.

97717 00_END FSR_SP CARBON 650B_GRPH BLK 17 SPECIALIZED ENDURO FSR CARBON 650B

Every Specialized model is available in both a 29/6Fattie and two 650b versions with 2.3 or 2.6″ tires. The $8,500 Specialized S-Works sees a full carbon frame for both models, and SRAM XX1 Eagle 1×12 plus Roval Traverse hoolkess carbon rims for a truly high end build.

93617-13_END FSR_PRO CARBON 29 6FATTIE_RKTRED BBYBLU BLK93617-10_END FSR_PRO CARBON 650B_SILTNT WHT

Dropping down to $6,500, the Pro build still features SRAM Eagle 1×12, only this time it’s X01. The wheels also transition to aluminum with Roval Traverse alloy hoops. As mentioned above, the Specialized Pro keeps the full Fact 11 carbon frame as well.

93617-43_END FSR_ELITE CARBON 29 6FATTIE_BLK MRNBLU RKTRED93617-40_END FSR_ELITE CARBON 650B_BLK CHAR

At $4,400, the Specialized Elite loses the carbon rear end with an M5 aluminum swingarm plus a Fact 9 carbon front triangle. At this point you drop down to SRAM GX 1×11, though the build still looks to be a solid value at this price.

3617-50_END_FSR_COMP 650B_USA_BLK CHAR93617-53_END FSR_COMP 29 6FATTIE_MXGRN MONGRN HYP

Last but not lease, the $3,000 2017 Enduro Comp. The full aluminum frame lacks SWAT Box storage, but otherwise features all of the same details and a SRAM GX/NX 1×11 drivetrain.

Rocky Mountain Growler 27.5+ 750 Hardtailphoto c. Rocky Mountain

Rocky Mountain Growler 750

With Crankworks just finishing comes the expected and unexpected introduction of models from companies ready to impress. Due to the explosion of plus size tires Rocky Mountain will be offering a traction seeking 27.5+ hardtail ready to crush trails. They will also be offering a Reaper full suspension youth bike that transforms for a growing child.

Rocky Mountain Growler 740 Hardtail

Growler 740

Having plus sized tires on a hardtail is making sense for many companies, due to the improved tire contact, bump absorption, and confidence. The Growler gets Rocky Mountain’s RMB 6061 hydro-formed tubing, 27.5+ tires, and a 120mm fork. Following a page from the 29er hardtail book, the XS and XXS frames will run 26+ tires instead of 27.5+ to reap the same trail rewards for smaller riders.

Rocky Mountain Growler 730 Hardtail

Growler 730

Expect the Growler in three editions, the 750 (high-end shown at top), 740 (mid), and 730 (entry level shown above). Each gets Boost spacing, a 1x drivetrain, 30.9 seat tube, threaded bb, zero stack head tube, and stealth dropper routing. Priced at $1,700 (750), $1,250 (740), $900 (730), it will be available late this month.

Rocky Mountain Reaper 26 kid's mtb

Completely different from the Growler shown above, the newest Reaper brings full suspension to the youth market, and it can roll both 24″ and 26″ wheels. So don’t worry about your kid growing too fast, they’ll get more than one season out of it. It’s also available to purchase in both wheel options with varying components.

The 2017 Rocky Mountain Reaper also gets their Ride-9 geometry chips, Form Alloy tubing, ABC pivots and BC2 bushing systems with grease ports for reduced wear and easier maintenance.

The Reaper’s geometry gets inspiration read straight from the Thunderbolt and Altitude trail bikes. It’s impressive 120mm front and 130mm rear shock is nothing to growl at, while Sram’s NX 1×11 (26″) or Shimano Deore 1×10 (24″) drivetrains finish it off nicely. It’s priced at $2,300 (Reaper 26″), $1,800 (Reaper 24″), and is available in early November.

GHOST ROKET X 27.5+ AL TAN / RED RIOT

Ghost Roket X 27.5+ Adventure Bags

Roket X

The 2017 Ghost Roket X 27.5+ fits into another new MTB wheel Standard. The “plus” makes all the difference in the world as 650 plus wheels differ in the wheel and tire width of their fellows without the suffix. Thanks to the Ghost bike having a larger contact surface with the ground you will experience extremely high grip with very low rolling resistance on whatever surface across the globe. 650B Plus allows you low air pressures at lower margins of danger as the rollover behavior is significantly improved compared to smaller wheels. An interesting alternative for hardtail, touring and all-mountain full suspension bikes!

Ghost Roket X 27.5+ AL 2017

Bike frame made of aluminum

The Roket aluminum frame is light, rigid and less expensive than what carbon would be. Modern aluminum frames are actually close to carbon visually, and they are hard to distinguish by the a new manufacturing process. Thanks to hydroforming technology, the production of a complex aluminum frame is possible, where considerably thinner walls and thus significant weight saving is attained.
