INTRODUCING WOODSMOKE

Woodsmoke is a new carbon hardtail mountain bike.

Woodsmoke 29+ GX1 in Khaki…

Salsa set out to design a bike that would be seemless when you and your bike are working together, as it seems like you can conquer any obstacle in your path. Each moving through a line, which seems like a cohesive plan between you and your bike. A bike Salsa feels will bring a higher level of “cohesiveness” to your riding is the new Salsa Woodsmoke.

The Woodsmoke frame is multiple wheelsize friendly, capable of running 29+, 27.5+, or standard 2-niner wheels. Each of these different wheel sizes delivers distinct riding characteristics:

29+ creates monumental rollover, traction and momentum.

27.5+ delivers quick, punchy grip and increased line choice.

Standard twenty-niner boosts traditional XC and climbing speed.

Salsa Woodsmoke 27.5+ GX1

Woodsmoke 27.5+ GX1 in White…

At the core of Woodsmoke is a progressive trail bike geometry provided by extremely short chainstay lengths between 400 and 417 mm (depending on wheel size).  Shorter than many road bikes, this rear-center length is then paired with a longer toptube, a shorter 50 mm stem, and wide handlebars providing the best seat in the house for trail domination.

It then get’s that trail ripping geometry combined with different Salsa wheel sizes by using different tire diameters as an advantage (paired with the adjustability of Salsa Alternator Dropouts Version 2.0) and the ability to run different fork lengths and suspension sag.  Using suspension forks between 100 – 140 mm in travel, or even their rigid Salsa Firestarter Carbon fork, the appropriate geometry can be found for how you want to ride Woodsmoke. Longer travel equals slacker headtube angles, while shorter travel (or our rigid Firestarter fork) create quicker, more race-style handling.  Note that 29+ suspension setups do require the appropriate suspension fork. It is not possible to use your regular or 27.5+ suspension fork for that setup.

Of course the Alternator Dropouts also allow you to set up singlespeed should you desire. It also allows for the ultra short rear end, but they also worked hard to keep the frame both 1x and 2x drivetrain compatible. That’s an important distinction for riders that still appreciate having that larger gear range over steep terrain.

Woodsmoke is available in five builds.

Salsa Fat Bikes

It’s been reported that there will be one more full suspension Fat option, dubbed the Salsa Bucksaw. And the designers are certainly not strangers when working with and engineering high modulus rides. So when the first Bucksaw model was unveiled many have been wondering and waiting patiently, if there would be a fiberous sibling. Well it’s true Salsa has been hard at work behind the scenes..

And it’s not only true, but it’s here – in the form of a new lighter, stiffer Bucksaw. The biggest addition is the new high modulus front triangle since the chainstay is still aluminum and the original Bucksaw already utilized a modulus fiber seatstay. While the total positive outcome for the high modulus front triangle has resulted in 300 grams lighter and said to offer better vibration damping and ride quality than the aluminum brother.

If you’re still on the fence about full susser fatty, you’ll have to ride one before you make the final call. Until then, check out the Salsa details and pricing is at the bottom of the article.

Salsa Bucksaw Carbon Fat Bike

Before long on the Bucksaw you will be sessioning your local jump park, pulling wheelies, full skids, and generally not concerned about the rolling resistance, weight, or any of the other criticisms.

Salsa Bucksaw Carbon Frame

Similar to most opinions, there are a ton of questions regarding this configuration with not only suspended forks, but full suspension models as well, seeming like something that doesn’t make to much sense until you get and test ride one.

They’re still not for everybody, but that’s why so many different bikes exist. But one things for sure, this newest Bucksaw is one sweet looking ride.

Salsa Bucksaw Carbon full-suspension Fat Bike

Overall, the carbon version looks to be nearly identical to the alloy 1 and 2 models that have identical tire clearance and geometry numbers. They have reported that full rides will retail for $6,499 with Carbon frames retailing for $2,699.

You’ll have to wait until Spring 2015 to get your hands on the new Bucksaw ride, but the aluminum 1 full starts shipping to dealers in just 4 days, with the 2 about two weeks behind.

DESCRIPTION

Salsa Craft of Hydro-forming via Horsethief 3..

Can you GET MUCH BETTER than this?

History has it that the cycling world of 29ers had quite a slow start but have rapidly gained acceptance as of late, which is greatly due to new technology and the newer geometry numbers that are now motivating the longer travel arena, which is where Salsa dips into the picture and their quite plush 120mm travel Horsethief, for an awesome example of where the 29er mtb playing field currently is, and headed in the future mountain bikes.

To dive right in to what’s most important about the newest full-susser model from the creative designers at Salsa, is the smart component pic they combined with a techno packed frame to allow for the newest 29er to throw down a trail fun factor that is comparable to a model that will cost you twice as much. They pulled it off with custom spec’d 6061-T6 hydroformed tubing throughout the entire frame, that has durability and aggressive mtb riding written all over it. Which doesn’t mean Salsa made it heavy, it’s a respectable sub-seven pounder with stout chain stays and an over sized main pivot to make the rear stiff as all get out. Top it all off with some aggressive geometry, sounds fun!

This will translate into that reassuring planted feeling when mach-ing through corners, and the most ideal rear wheel tracking for amazing ride composure through rough trail sections. The other great feature to the 2013 full suspension design is the one-piece rear triangle, saving on down the road maintenance headaches with two less pivots to mess with, and making it stiffer as well.

For the rear axle the team of Salsa engineers have thoughtfully employed a 12 x 142mm setup to increase the overall torsional stiffness, making the rear end ride tight, especially because of shorter 460mm chain stays to really make the model an all out blast on any trail you want to throw at it. That means you will be dropping your friends on tight switchbacks that won’t make it flinch an inch, making you want more.

Salsa didn’t stop there though, as they have put a fare amount of design thought into making sure the ride was ideal for all-day jaunts on tough terrain. The result being those short stays discussed above, longer top tube, slack angles, and a lower stance for awesome center of gravity, to enable the aggressive setup to float over rock gardens inspiring your confidence at the same time, and claw up over the most jagged of single track ascents. To make the kick ass ride come full circle, they utilized a Rock Shox Monarch R custom tuned shock to produce 120mm-travel along with a Sektor fork at 130mm-travel to fully complete it, and give you an example of what the Thief 3 might have under the hood.

The Horsethief’s great component mix uses Shimano SLX for the derailleurs and shifters, and a Deore crank. They have also rolled the model out with 32 hole Sun Inferno rims with Formula hubs, and Conti Mt King II 2.4 tires, are updated with newer large aggressive knobs to put the ride where it was designed to be, on the aggressive side.

To finish the detailed Salsa list off, is their in house Pro Moto cockpit along with seat post to complete the build items, for the Thief 3 Complete Bike. While the pricing is set at $2,549.00 MSRP, but it’s now on sale for $1685.00 at the Purchase info link to the right.. while supplies last.

Thank You for supporting 29erCafe.. Enjoy the ride!

Fun must come in 3’s

The Salsa El Mariachi mountain bikes are their truly do-it-well-everyday bicycle. The 1rst introduction of their CroMoly steel 29ers date all the way back to 2007, and mountain bikers across the globe have received it with praise and countless rave reviews since those inaugural days.

So to quickly fast forward to the season upon us, the El Mariachi Cro-Moly frame has seen a few updates such as the new Kung Fu variety of steel that also provides that key trait of an unmistakable trail quality that doesn’t dismiss an ounce of durability.
Salsa has also become quite popular over their Alternator dropout design, the application has proven itself in the toughest and longest of rides and race events. They work awesome for quick and secure rear wheel adjustment which makes these El Mariachi mountain bikes incredibly versatile and capable to dial up the drive system exactly as you wish. You can operate the 29er as single speed or with a geared setup all depending on what the trail mission is at hand.
They also developed what is called the Enabler Fork, which utilizes a single speed wheel for the front wheel thus providing a bail out option for an emergency if a drive train catastrophe happened to occur in the middle of nowhere.
Ahh 3 is the magical number. If you must dance, you must pay the Mariachi band… Enjoy!

Salsa Spearfish 2 Full Suspension Bike w/ SRAM

Salsa Spearfish 2 2013

The Spearfish 2 model is Salsa’s killer and adaptable all-day riding machine that is just as at home at ultra-endurance racing events as it is riding every day, they are suited well for twenty four hour death marches, 100-milers or daily single track sessions with the bros.

They have focused hard on the Spearfish 2’s suspension and pedaling efficiency, so the end result is a mtb that provides very balanced and stable handling traits that shine bright at the end of a long ride or race day, when mountain bikers show the most fatigue.

They also dialed the geometry in as well to play nicely with 80mm of rear suspension travel, that is handled by Foxs’ tuned Float CTD shock. The rear shock was paired with a Rock Shox four inch travel Reba RLT up front that comes out of the gate with a tapered thru-axle.

For the Spearfish 2 full suspension ride in particular they have used their EV6 aluminum tubing on the frame. It also utilizes their minimized-pivot rear suspension platform along with the 142 x 12mm style Maxle type rear dropout to make the rear of the bike track superbly. This design of removing the rear pivot not only minimized the frames weight, but makes the complexity far less thus giving you less maintenance down the road.

The designers actually applied the name of the frame from a town in South Dakota called Spearfish, which is also home to a mecca of amazing single track… Enjoy!

Salsa Mamasita 29 bikes-2013

  • 2013 Salsa Mamasita 2
  • hardtail mountain bikes
  • Salsa Cycles

 model: HARDTAIL 29ERS

For the group of mountain bikes at Salsa Cycles the 2013 Mamasita falls directly in their race-bred hard tail category. They have not only designed it to be fast and feather light, but to be one of the most efficient rides out on the single track. You will absolutely love any of the pursuits you choose to throw it in the mix with, whether it’s a minor 2 hour jaunt, or a mere 24.
Their engineers have used EV6 Xtrolite aluminum tubes that were custom-drawn up specific for the 2013 Mamasita 29er project. They know all to well that a lightweight frame is key, but they also never lose site of four key qualities – the best durability along with ride quality, transfer of power from the pedals, and steering precision. So for steering precision with the front end, they applied an over sized down tube that connects the tapered head tube to get the front end stiffness ultimately where it needs to be, so the mtn ride stays planted where you direct it.

For the power transfer department they utilized shaped seat stays and chain stays to maintain the necessary lateral stiffness, but yet still have a small amount of vertical compliance to give the mountain bike that 24 hour ride quality. To go one step farther they used a PressFit 30 BB shell to improves the frames stiffness and power transfer even further.

Salsa’s goal was to have that ‘get up and go’ spunk without any ‘please, make it stop’ trail feedback.

If you’re the fitness type who is simply out to challenge yourself, or if you have a goal to compete with others in the mix on race day, the Mamasita 29er mountain bike will help you destroy whatever race course that happens to be placed in front of you.

Salsa Cycles El Mariachi 2 » Steel Dream For 2013!

  • Salsa EL Mariachi 2

model: EL MARIACHI 2 HARDTAIL

If you are an experienced rider who can spot a gimmick from a mile away, then skip to the next paragraph. If on the other spectrum you are a greenhorn who is climbing up through the ranks of mountain bikes, read on. Finding and purchasing a new mountain bike these days is a daunting task with the large spectrum of components that are marketed. And to complicate and amplify this problem is the finely tuned (suck you in) media world. It becomes apparent when you find yourself struggling to make choices. The best way however to break free is to study over the manufacturer specifications. Salsa Cycles has a perfect example of this with the El Mariachi 2 MTB, on how they can not only be set up right but priced right.
2013 Salsa EL Mariachi 2 hardtail bike
Drive train components tell a lot about ones dedication to riding or that notorious bottom dollar. The El Mariachi 2 reflects an ideal balance between quality and frugality, flirting around that 2k price, but its specs rival rigs that will require one more Grover Cleveland to be able to play. Do some homework here and see if you can find another 2013 29r out there right now at this EL Mariachi retail price that is decked out with a Stan’s NoTubes wheels, and size-specific tubing that is triple butted, along with a tapered 15mm thru-axle front fork that has both rebound and lockout adjustments.

If the possibility arises that you were able to find something else close to that criteria, Salsa has stacked this deck yet even higher in the drivetrain and cockpit department where big brands are able to cut corners and hide their cost-cutting measures. The most common is using triple cranks because they are the most readily available, and used on 26 inch mountain bikes. With bigger 29 inch wheel diameters a 42t outer ring translates into a monster gear, that is simply not going to get used anymore because it’s simply to big and no longer a useful gear.

So the designers have employed what works best for big wheel bikes, the EL Mariachi uses a SRAM S1000 double crank that has 26/39t gearing to give you a weight reduction, along with a better chain line. The double cranks drive a KMC X10 chain connected to SRAM’s PG-1050 11-36t cogset — which is another area where penny pinchers can boost up their pocket books.

Generally this price range of mtn ride, would come with a full-steel cassette, but the SRAM PG-1050 has an alloy carrier, which again saves more rotation weight. It is key for 29ers to watch their rotational weight, which translates into pick up speed, and they will all play out on how the complete setup rides.

Funner, 29erCafe

The other important player in the 29 inch game are the wheels. If you show up to any cross country race, you will be hard pressed not to see Stan’s NoTubes wheels rolling under 29ers. Usually though, those XC race bikes aren’t equipped with those wheels — people upgraded to them. Surprisingly, they have set up the El Mariachi standard with NoTubes ZTR Rapid rims. They provide some of the best rolling characteristics with their trail-smoothing tire volume that is at a lower terrain-grabbing pressure.

2013 Salsa El Mariachi SS limited edition bike

MODEL LET’S DANCE

Intended use_2013
Salsa turned their prized and most loved bike into the dedicated El Mariachi SS Limited Edition model, a committed single speed mountain bike to say the least.

They first unveiled their steel framed model a solid five years ago, and mountain bikers across the globe have raved about it ever since. Possibly attaining a cult following. Their choice to use Kung Fu ChroMoly tubing for this particular SS frame has provided that ride quality without losing any durability.

Although the original El Mariachi has always had the capabilities to be setup as a single speed drivetrain, the new SS Limited Edition is committed to the tried and true single-speeder. Because they opted to purposefully not include any front or rear derailleur cable stops. Giving the model a clean paint job to revel over!
El Mariachi SS limited edition rear gold hub

They have also utilized their alternator dropout rear triangle that features secure wheel adjustment and a faster chain tensioning process. These dropouts have totally proven themselves competing in some of the toughest rides and races out their. To be exact this version that was equipped with a single speed drivetrain received 2nd place in 2011 racing the notorious long and difficult Tour Divide event.

Possibly you’re thoughts as well are to take on the bike-packing epic Tour Divide race or to simply join your local Saturday /Sunday mtb chain-gang to partake in the all day trail beatdown, whichever you decide on the taller wheeled SS setup will help to keep you lining up for more helpings of that oh so delicious dirt.

2012 Salsa Mamasita 2 Hardtail

Salsa Mamasita aluminum 29er hardtail -2012

Salsa Mamasita 2 aluminum hardtail 2012

Salsa Cycles has been designing and implementing quality, with very practical bikes since way back in the old-school era of mountain biking out of the town of Petaluma, California. Still to this day, they continue to keep that serious passion rolling with mountain bikes on the trail less traveled, the Salsa Mamasita MTB takes the tradition they have onward. With the Mamasita being a hardtail XC bike, it fortunately is just as comfy during the ultra long 24 hour endurance event as it is ripping everyday 2 hours down the local single track.

Salsa equipped the alloy hardtail with a Rock Shox Reba RL front fork. The Reba has 4 inches of travel that is very durable, consistent, and super easy to work on and maintain. It has a dual air spring chamber making it simple as well to adjust, the air chamber design is the lightest of the systems available on the market. This very responsive front fork really enhances the total ride qualities of the Salsa mountain bike without having to re-focus your eyes because of too much downhill chatter bumpiness.

They have also speced the Salsa ride with SRAM 2×10  X7 26-39T cranks and a press-fit 30 BB. There are SRAM components utilized to finish out the drive-train having a PG-1050, 12-36T cassette with a PC1030 10 speed chain. With the shifting duties, they used an X9 rear derailleur and SRAM X7 front derailleur, with some X7 trigger shifters. The braking is handled by Avid with some Elixir five disk brakes for very powerful stopping abilities. For the cockpit parts they have a Pro Moto 2 seat post with a WTB Silverado seat to keep you comfy while in flight on your new ride. Salsa Spearfish 3 green machine 29ers

Salsa Cycles designed the Spearfish model in the 1, 2, and 3 setups to work great for 24-hour and other ultra-endurance mountain bike efforts, to target efficiency. The frame offers 80 mm of rear wheel travel, paired with 100 mm of plush Fox front suspension.
The hydroformed 6000-series aluminum tubing is stiff and ultra-durable. It is low weight and uses a pivot-minimizing suspension design. Removing the rear pivot helps keep chassis weight down, while also reducing complexity and pivot maintenance.
The rear suspension for the Spearfish 29er bike is designed for efficient pedaling. As a result, it climbs extremely well and exhibits very little suspension bob. The tapered 1-1/8 to 1-1/2” headtube provides a stiffer front end and more precise steering. Likewise, the press-fit BB30 bottom bracket also transmits pedaling power more efficiently than older outboard bearing designs.
The Spearfish frame geometry results in neutral handling that does not steer overly quickly. The 29er bike is designed to perform well for someone in his or her 5th or 10th or even 20th hour of riding or racing, and perhaps a tad slower than a mountain bike that aims at winning several hour XC races.
