2013 Trek Stache 29er Mountain Bikes

2013 Trek Stache 29er hardtail Mountain Bikes

For the upcoming mountain biking season Trek has designed a new chic model for their 29er hard tail lineup. Coined the Stache (as in mustache) is an aluminum twenty niner with a tall travel 120mm fork. Trek calls this beast a “play bike” designed with aggressive hard tail riders in mind who want to do it all. They included ISCG tabs for chain retention, and are using a 12x142mm thru axle for the rear with some options for the dropper post cable routing for seat posts with either external or internal cable routing. A few other items they have incorporated into this steed is a press-fit BB, post mount style rear brake caliper and the routing of the front and rear derailleur housing is internal. They will have two models of the 2013 TREK STACHE offered, both of which will be built up with a 2×10 drive train and Shimano’s Shadow + rear derailleur. The TREK Stache 8 is the upper level model of the two and will be available with a Fox 32 Evolution fork with a 15QR axle, and the rims are  Bontrager tubeless ready, the rear derailleur is a Shimano XT shadow plus, the shifters will be Shimano SLX, with SLX brakes and front derailleur. And the lower priced version is called the TREK Stache 7 and will be supplied with a Rock Shox Recon fork with front 15mm Maxle,  the brakes are handled by Avid Elixir 1’s, with Bontrager tubeless-ready rims the same as the Stache 8, with SLX shifters from Shimano and both derailleurs being SLX on the STACHE 7.

Renovo Badash 29er Wooden Bikes

Renovo Badash 29er Wooden Mountain Bike

The wooden Renovo Badash 29er bikes.

The only hardwood twenty niner mountain bike we have seen at 29er–Cafe that actually appears that from the factory testing it can shred single track. So we have done a little research to look at how this unique bike performs on the trail. Does it ride as good as it looks?

The bike company Renovo is unique. While some bike manufactures have gone the route of bamboo, these guys have used a series of hardwoods to design and build their wooden mountain bike like these 29er hardtails. The Badash twenty niner came out of the Red Stag series of frames made of New Zealand pine and hickory.

The quality of craftsmanship is nothing short of amazing. The amount of research and development that went into making sure this Badash wooden mountain bike frame is as much of a work of art as it is a ride able bike is huge. Having a $2,550 price tag and a 5.5 pound frame weight, it would be expected this bike to be a high end, boutique piece, but it over produces on the wow factor. From the way the construction of the hardwood is joined together to the internal cable routing, every ounce of this frame is thought out and completed to perfection the same way any hardwood furniture craftsman would accomplish.

The Renovo Badash twenty niner has been through rigorous testing – results revealing that Oak and Hickory can withstand extreme forces while still providing ride qualities which allow for long lasting service and durability where other materials would fail. When they first came up with the concept of creating an MTB their comprehensive experience working with wood was renowned, yet they’d taken a long time before making the decision to create the 29er bikes using Hickory. After testing their road bike frames for impact resistance against aluminium, steel and titanium, gradually the MTB  transformed from concept to reality.

Renovo 29er mountain bike seat tube
In the geometry department, the Renovo Badash has a HT angle of 71 degrees. This falls right in line with most twenty niner hard tails in the industry.

Renovo 29er wooden mountain bike internal routing

It sounds like from early rider reviews of the wooden mountain bike are given that the Renovo hardwood frame does a great job of softening stutter bumps on the trail. While the frame doesn’t feel as dead as one might ponder, it felt a little bit softer than steel. The hardwood on the Badash has the capacity to absorb the vibrations so you don’t feel it in the saddle and grips. Normally when a frame deadens the trail chatter it comes at a price in the stiffness of the rear triangle. The Renovo’s rear end tracked very well keeping traction through off camber and turns g-outs. The stiffness of the frame in hard load situations was there a bit more than a steel frame but not quite as much as aluminum. It was almost like a well built carbon frame from that aspect.

These twenty niner bikes are probably not for everyone. If you are looking for something unique that still can be pushed like a real mountain bike, the Renovo Badash 29er is exactly that. I am a sucker for works of art. When you roll up with the wooden Badash twenty niner MTB, you are going to get a lot of questions from other riders. It truly is a unique piece of art that can take the abuse on the trail. It might not be a race bike, but it will be an incredibly fun bike that you can not see anywhere else.

Mountain bikes are made to be ridden and it looks like a great time can be had with the Badash twenty niner from the creative woodworkers. It is the only woodenmountain bike we have found that gets ridden that people enjoy riding as much as looking at it. The Badash hardwoods are a simple alternative to absorb vibrations.

Kinesis Maxlight FF29 Twenty Niner Mountain Bikes

Kinesis Maxlight FF29 Twenty Niner Mountain Bikes

One of the most eagerly awaited UK mountain bikes of 2012 is the Kinesis Maxlight FF29. We have been counting the days until it hit production. That day has come, it is now available.

Kinesis Maxlight FF29 mountain bikes

It seems very clear that this UK based company wanted their first 29er to obtain the same handling their previous 26 in mountain bikes are well known for.
Which means a longer and slacker geometry so it feels right at home when being ripped through fast flowing single track, by inserting a perma grin 🙂 on your face at the same time. The FF29’s geometry is nice at 71.5 degrees for the head angle, and is based around a 100-120 mm fork. They made the chainstays  short at 17.5in and the wheelbase is 42.59in.
The technology called Super-Plastic Formed has been used to mold the 6000 series aluminum tubing. The down tube strays from the traditional Kinesis straight tube aesthetic to a down tube that curves near the head tube and bottom bracket. They utilized a tapered head tube, and a straight top tube – where the cables are routed underneath, and Super taper seat stays to provide enough clearance for 2.2 in MTB tires, these are classy looking twenty niner bikes. Weight of the FF29 frame only is  1.78kg (3.92lb).

Pinarello Dogma XC 9.9 Carbon Twenty Niner

Carbon Pinarello Dogma XC 02 Twenty Niner

The Road Cycling company Pinarello has confirmed they are jumping into the world of mountain bikes with the unveil of their first Twenty Niner, the Dogma XC 9.9.

Carbon Pinarello Dogma XC 9.9 Twenty Niner

Pinarello decided they couldn’t find innovation in the twenty niner hardtail and decided to enter the mountain bike market with what they are calling a “striking example of innovation”.

This innovation is the ONDA Asymmetric Twin Arms, the company’s very unique rear triangle. The seat stays attach to the seat tube at different points above the top tube. This dissipates vibrations across the larger surface area, allowing the frame to be a “comfort without rival in a hardtail twenty niner mountain bike without losing any pedal response.”

Another design they are using is the mounting of the rear disc brake inside the rear triangle. We know of a few other models of twenty niner mountain bikes that are doing this as well.

The all-carbon Dogma XC frame is using 60HM1K by Torayca with Nanoalloy technology. There seems to be more use of nano technology in carbon to make refinements to the setup designs and reduce the grams on the scale more, and  the area they’re focusing on is with the resin. When building a carbon fiber setup, the resin is the bonding agent to stick the carbon fibers together. The resin coats each layer of carbon and there can’t be any gaps to ensure structural integrity. By using a resin enhanced with carbon nanotubes, it allows the resin to have an improved strength-to-weight ratio.

Carbon Hardtail Pinarello Dogma XC 01 MTB

A few other ideas they used on the XC are a four-bolt seat clamp that directly mounts to the seat stays. Fork-Stopper technology keeps the down tube from getting bashed up in crashes, as Pinarello didn’t curve the down tube for fork clearance to keep their geometry correct, so the Fork-stopper then protects this issue. All hitting the scales at 1,050 grams for the size medium version.
Internally routed Cables, and an integrated front derailleur mount allows for two options of cable routing to suit SRAM or Shimano group sets.

Wilier 101XN Hardtail Bike

Wilier 101XN Frame

  • Wilier are well known for their road bikes, the Italian company has a historic 106-years of making bikes for skinny tires, but they will be introducing their first 29er bikes to the MTB market this year.

Wilier Carbon 29er Hardtail mountain bike toptube decal

Wilier has been building mountain bikes for a while but they haven’t been brought to to many market areas outside of Italy. That changes with the Wilier 101 XN bikes, however. When the big wheeled concept came to be Wilier jumped on board taking all the knowledge they experienced with building high-end carbon road frames and started working on this 29er project. The 101 XN is designed around an 80mm fork with an aggressive racing geometry. The carbon frame uses most of the technology found on the high-end carbon Wilier road bikes, with the 101 XN twenty niner bikes using the same 60-ton carbon fiber as the recently release Cento 1 SR.
Wilier 29er Bikes with DT Swiss Fork
The carbon frame weight is 1,260 grams for the size Large. It also includes some intuitive design features, one of those being the internal cable routing, which gives the twenty niner a clean modern aesthetic. There is a plate on the downtube that is removable to make it easier to feed the cables, and there’s a sweet cable guide below the bottom bracket. Which is a great solution to help with bike maintenance.

    Carbon fiber mountain bikes

Also the rear of the mountain bike has a replaceable rear hanger that is compatible with QR & Thru axles. Wilier also applied a plate inside the chainrings which they call Integrated Frame Protection and it operates as a chain device to keep your chain from coming off, to protect the spendy carbon frame. Skinny seatstays give a little bit of forgiveness on your lower back, while they used asymmetric chainstays to handle with the different loads.

    wilier 2014

These Wilier bikes will be offered in two kits. The first featured in our photos, is built with a  Shimano XTR groupset, RockShox SID fork (which is different to the bike in these photos), Fulcrum Red Power XL wheels with Geax AKA tires, a Ritchey cockpit and seatpost, and a Selle San Marco Concor saddle. That’ll cost you £3,999.

The second kit is switched with a Shimano XT groupset, FSA Afterburner crankset and RockShox Reba RL fork to bring the cost down to £2,750. It is said there is an aluminum version of the frame, the Wilier 503 that is also in the works.

    Intense Hard Eddie Hardtail 29er

Intense Hard Eddie 29er mountain bikes

Intense Hard Eddie 29er Expert XT Build Complete Bike 2014

Intense Cycles has finally unveiled  its all new Hard Eddie which is the company’s first 29er that’s a hard tail. The new ride is intended to bridge the gap from their extensively cool downhill  and gravity full-suspension mountain bikes. The new twenty niner is designed for the discriminating x-country rider that appreciates high quality without any compromise. The first new Hard Eddie carbon fiber 29er mountain bikes were displayed at eurobike late last summer. During the bike show, the new ride caught a ton of attention because it was the first twenty niner design to come out of Intense. At the same time they launched two other composite models in their 26″ full-suspension range, the carbine, and carbine SL. And now a Carbine 29 X01 for 2014! So they are both built using the same carbon fiber technology. They were designed by the iconic artisan Jeff Steber. They decided to outsource and have the composite hard tail models engineered by SEED Engineering transforming them into amazing composite art.

Jeff Steber’s Press Release,“When they started two and half years ago, they saw what was starting to happen with high end carbon fiber manufacturing and the trend towards stronger mountain bikes and more aggressive trail riding,” Steber said. “We built a huge factory here to keep our alloy production in the U.S., but we saw the trend was moving toward carbon fiber even for the more aggressive mountain rides. Basically, Intense decided they had to jump on the carbon thing and do it the best possible. They are aluminum experts, and immediately realized they needed an expert in composites and found the SEED guys.”

With similarities to the engineering design of their first versions that were built out of carbon the Carbine model, the new Hard Ed also received the same G1 rear drop out system that comes with the option of standard QR, or changeable to a 142×12 rear axle dropout, which is shown in the photos below. There is one difference between the two, for the Hard Ed it also has the option of single speed as well. With a 100-mm fork the Hard Tail MTB stands on a 70° steering angle and 72 ° seat angle. The PF30 bottom bracket and integrated headset both aid to keep the ride stiff and feather light. The claimed weight for the frame is right around 2 lbs 7 oz  or approx. ( 1,100g). The Intense model is also available in two color options: naked and naked red. They have also designed a matching rigid composite fork option that they say lets you build a bike right in there at 18lbs.

It was about time Intense made a fast h…tail in the wonder material.
They have stated their idea was that they had to change with the times, or get stagnant. The Southern California Company has always gone huge with their downhill mountain  bikes and the gravity scene, but now Intense is placing some energy into 29ers to give their dealers more option and their customers more available option as well.

Sticking to the successful formula of the Carbine, the hard tail 29’s ride quality comes from the refined Intense geometry and quality construction.

    About Me

    Hi There!

Hi There, TJ here, I’d like to take the opportunity to thank you for visiting  my site, dedicated to big wheel  mountain biking,  and the never ending search of the eternal single track!

A little more about me, I am forty-three years, a contractor by day, aspiring bike racer by night, and this is my 29erCafe site. I live on single track, and I like beer, (And getting caught in the rain.)  Racing and general fitness activities have been a regular part of my entire life. I have been racing since 1988. I still to this day love and crave those super long alpine climbs on the bike, the only difference is, now I am riding a 29er.

On any given day though, I can be found out recreating on whatever type of bike suits the day. I just enjoy having fun with my friends and wherever adventure takes us…

    Thank You For Visiting 29erCafe!

    FOX Isolated Technology

Air and oil do mix, and in the world of suspension, it degrades performance. Our isolation technology employs a bladder system that simply keeps the oil and air from mixing to provide optimal performance on your twenty niner  mountain bike in all riding extremes.

We worked with FOX sponsored athletes to test the system and fine tune the damping. The first production FIT dampers were produced in the 2005 model year in our 40 RC2 and 36 TALAS RC2 models.

Since then, we’ve utilized the single wall expanding bladder and inverted damper technology originally found in our 29er 32 RLC and RL dampers, created an RLC damper for our 36 160 line, and developed the 36 180 RC2 damper.

FOX Isolated Technology- mountain bike forks for 29ers

Don’t sacrifice performance on your twenty niner by going with a pinner skewer. We teamed up with Shimano to create an axle that is extremely light and stiff, in a tool-free design. You’ll gain a ton of confidence on your twenty niner mountain bike when you’re deep in the rocks, roots, and ruts.

    15QR is available in the 29er 32 and 29er 34 forks.
